![]() i'm about to lease a few servers (moving from an existing provider) and i'm wondering does anyone else use ev1servers.net and how good are their connections?
i dont really see anyone talk about them around here, but they seem to offer decient spec servers with alot of bandwidth at a low price... just wondering is that low price because their connections are shit or for some other reason... |

their servers sell out very fast, I don't see why they have so few on hand if the demand is there

probably because they lease space and to increase their capacity would be a big expense.

I've had servers at EV1 for about 2 years. Never had any problems that I didn't cause myself. You just have to know how to manage your stuff. They don't manage or support anything. They've always been fast to help when I needed them to do something, even when I didn't pay the "premium" fast service prices.
I'm sure there's a few exceptions, like there are everywhere, but in my experience, most people I've seen bash them were people that didn't know how to run linux or a web server and then got mad when they realized that "unmanaged" really does mean unmanaged. You buy it, you break it, you fix it. They won't do anything unless you pay them, and they won't fix it, they'll just restore the machine to it's original state so you can rebuild it. |

ive had a server with them for over 2 years now without problems. I am in the process of getting a server with serverprovider.com, which is fully managed and have great deals aswell... I dont know of any of the providers here who sale or even have the # of servers that rackshack does, so they must not be that bad.

We've been with them for a couple years now, as well. No major hangups. You definitely need a sysadmin that knows what he is doing to lock the server up and keep it stable. If you have that it should be fine, -g

THey're not bad - just don't use them as your primary host!

I agree with many of the posts above. If you know how to manage a server, then Ev1 is great. And 30 gb a day is no problem. Along with my power horses, I still have a couple of servers that I first hooked up about 3 years ago... Older Celeron machines, and I pump through just under 30gb a day to each of these with absolutely no problems.

I used them for quite some time and never had an issue, but I switched to servermatrix.com because I liked their server specs better. I think SM has better prices, at least on the dual xeons... and they have servers in stock more often.

I'm having my servers there since 3 or more years, and I'm very satisfied. But you have to know how to manage your own server (updates, removal of bugs etc.) cause otherwise you're wasting your time. They just give you the hardware and nothing else, and you'll not get any support if you ask some questions that don't refer to any hardware problems (HD failure etc.).
So if you know how to manage a server, go with EV1, otherwise go and buy a managed server. |

I use one of their servers as backup.
I daily rsync my content over. Never had a problem but you need at least know your way around unix, apache etc. as their support sucks

I've 4 servers (all with FreeBSD) with them, some doing 60GB+ daily. Not a problem at all. They have live support, which works great imo. All problems I ever had were solved within 2 or 3 hours.
Further you have console access to your server (for free). They have 2 datacenters with over 20k servers. I don't know why anyone would say you shouldn't have your primary server(s) there. Their buildings have high security standards, they have their own power supply, support is great and I never have experienced any downtime to my servers that wasn't my own fault. Of course, the servers are unmanaged, so if you don't know anything from (RedHat) Linux or (Free)BSD, you just shouldn't have an unmanaged server. Imo EV1 is one of the greatest hosting companies around.

just a question... but why would one need a managed server? Don't you just set it up and go? |

The only problem I had with EV1 was submitting to a handful of TGPs that blocked the entire range of EV1 IPs. Because the service is so cheap, a lot of cheaters tend to host there & sometimes your box will get lumped in just because of the close range in addresses.
As for managed or unmanaged, I found it was just too much of a headache to handle myself when there were problems & there will be problems! cPanel is great, but security holes are found & it needs to be upgraded. If you try to upgrade from the GUI interface & your box goes down, you need to know how to telnet etc. to get it flowing again. |

As has been said apart from very rare hardware issues (usually at the start if they happen) they are great BUT you do need to have half a clue about server management or hire someone that does. We have a couple of boxes there used for less important stuff but the've been so hassle free I'd trust them with more important stuff too were I to move it.
Read and re-read the bit about server management though. At least one post in this thread proves the point about needing it. Far too many people use EV1 servers expecting them to somehow run themselves. Oh...and a minor gripe. They install slightly out-of-date software (such as older versions of Apache etc) by DEFAULT. It means that immediately you get the server you badly need a few hours spent updating stuff to remove any security holes/bugs. Again it's where some *nix knowledge kicks in. |
