This is just an example...

If a registered business was called "TV Guys" and they owned tvguys.com, in your opinion, would registering televisionguys.com be smart or stupid?

Smart in that it could bring in targeted visitors who might be thinking about tvguys.com or stupid in that tvguys.com could come after you seeing how they own the name.

it cost you 8 bucks and you could use it to generate traffic from unusual sources without fear of getting your real domain banned.

What I mean is...should I worry about legal action from the owner of "tvguys.com" or seeing how it's generic, could I get away with it?
