The thing with cable is it tends to bog down depending on the number of users, with DSL it's a dedicated line. Also I have heard of quite a few people being bombarded with viruses and shit being on cable...

I have both shaw and telus.

Telus is worlds apart for shaw in reliability. About a week out of every month, shaw will be slow to US based servers... Yes, I said *a week*. Your max speed will be ~200KB/sec.

Shaw is definitely faster than telus overall... 450KB/sec max on Telus, 650KB/sec on shaw...

Ping times to the US usually favor Telus, on some routes.. shaw... Overall Telus.

Shaw will harass you if you do any big data transfers... whereas, with telus I can send/receive as much as I can in a month and they never call.

Telus *rarely* goes down, shaw occassionally.

I use shaw to game, and telus for work. You can't do large sends/receives on shaw over a period of time and expect to stay connected with them, they'll shut you off.

If you're doing relatively small transfers and enjoy the speed bursts, go shaw.

Novus Telecom here in Vancouver. I just ran 3 spped tests and averaged out at 2.9mbps. Not bad for $24.99/month.

I have been with Shaw for over 6 years now and never have I had that problem.
I do large sends and receives never have I been shut down by Shaw.
Have they shut you down?
Where in Canada are you located?
That may have something to do with it.

I've switched to Shaw a week ago and love it.

For those with Shaw extreme, can you tell me what the speed difference is with the regular connection?

I have the Motorola SB5100 and if that's what you're talking about, then no.

Shaw have 3 different internet options. One is "lite", one is regular and the other is extreme. Each has a higher speed than the other. I just don't know how much faster extreme is in comparison to regular. That's what I'd like to know.

It's the area, not the package your on or the modem. Some areas in Vancouver were getting patchy 1mb/s D/L connections with the motorola modem on the extreme package ( supposed to be 8mb/s... Support told me to expect 5mb/s or more..).

I'm on Cogeco here in Ontario, we've got 10 mbit down and 1 mbit up, fastest home internet in Ontario according to the Globe and Mail. I'm pretty happy with it except for slow DNS lookups. I can't imagine getting less then 700 kB/s downloading anymore, usually I get 1000 kB/s though.

Out here in the sticks (halifax) we have Alliant DSL and Eastlink cable. Eastlink is solid, never bitches about large downloads, and I routinely get over 200k/s to the west coast from here, most time more than that. 99.9% uptime.

Surprisingly every time I call up tech support for whatever reason (hey, it's halifax... we get helluva snows out here, another 40-50cm predicted for sunday even) I invariably get someone on the phone with a genuine CLUE, not some $6.50/hr flunkie reading from a list. That's worth the price of admission right there.

We get it as part of a deal... digi cable box w. tivo, 2 phone lines w. LD calling plan, cable modem for I believe $120 (my wife pays all the bills, but that sounds about right). Beats the pants off the rogers cable stuff I had when I was still living in Maple Ridge in BC.
