For those of you who may have signed up for Zfreehost and are using it for TGP gallerys, better check you gallerys. I just learned that somewhere around one hundred gallerys have been deleted which cause a 404 to Zfreehost's 404 page. Another free host bites the dust, at least for me. By the way Xingster sucks also.

I have taken every thing down from both hosts.

Yes i noticed that Most the Gallerys that got on the HUn from that freehost went 404

Now it makes you wonder why freehosts Like mine (Which have been a clean host for 3 years) and Wizdoms Very Rarely Get on the Hun

I dont think it would be right for a freehost to purposely do that but if they have to fuck people to make money the people should fuck them

Well guys they offer no headers and footers.. so there plan is this.. you guys maek the sites. they delete the sites and make money.

I GUARANTEE the sites they delete are legal sites as well. Just be smart if it seems to good to be true, then it is... Maybe theese guys will be around for a while, maybe they wont. But its clear there business plan is to make money off deleting your galleries.

I tested them got 300k a day on a few galleries.

No problems.

Also their support is quite nice I think they are on the level.

They are working on their servers so perhaps something went wrong?

Also pathfinder why are you spamming al the boards with this and didn't post on their own?

I have learned over the years that it is a waste of time to post a complaint on a free host's board because they always have an excuse for the shit that happens, but yet shit continues to happen.

I have never had anything disappear from any paid host I have used in three years time, nor the frequent problems that exist with a free host.

I just don't have the inclination to listen to a free hosts excuses anymore. I posted what happened with me, and people are free to make of it what they want.

I just can't stand it when someone without any knowledge of a server start badmouthing a freehost.

this is what I replied to you there:

People before you start pointing fingers, you should know a littlebit about servers and connections.
Specialy on freehosting webservers get hammered with traffic(can we say Hun listing boys and girls?)

A server can only handle so many connections and when a connection can't get to the page requested it often goes 404.

It can happen on any server. Do a test and hit a page on your own paid hosting with 100k hits from a hitbot, then check your logs and I asure you that there will be 404's on the page you know is there!

Now that offcourse is no excuse for gallery pages disappearing but this can also easily be explained when the server the hosting is on is Unix. Specialy apache webserver software can easily do this.

The best example I can give is our own servercrash on the server this board is on.

Apache ran out of swap space, and when it does it deletes everything it doesn't need in order to run.

How do servers run out of swap space?

Easy, when you run a serverpark(a bunch of servers connected in a network(cluster)there is always one server responsible for keeping track of accounts, diskspace etc... when that server goes down even for a second the other servers will think they are out of space and you can feel it comming they happily start deleting files.

This happens way more often then you know, it is with a good backup system these matters are caught and through a redundant system it gets set back so fast that all you noticed was a bit of downtime.

Now I'm not defending, Xingster, FSN or Zfreehost but I don't think it is right to point fingers at them before knowing the ins and outs of what goes on with a server or can happen to it for that matter.

It is easy to point fingers at a freehost and say they steal traffic, redirect it etc... and I'm sure some do, I also know most of them don't and occurances like these are the result of technical problems more likely then malicious intend.

I would like to put in my 2 cents here. The bullshit seems to get really deep until someone pulls back the curtain to show the wizard at the controls. There is absolutely no way that anyone, and I do mean anyone, can run a freehost off of just the 404 traffic!!!! And so you say, Tim how do you know this for a fact ?? Well by just looking at my traffic on my domains that I run tgp galleries on, I can say that there just ain't enough clicks there to pay the bill folks. Here is my stats for a partial day.

Analyzed requests from Mon-29-Oct-2001 10:46 to Tue-30-Oct-2001 08:42 (0.91 days).

Successful requests for pages: 377,686
Distinct hosts served: 154,560
Data transferred: 56.476 Gbytes

6160729: 200 OK
69998: 206 Partial content
8723: 301 Document moved permanently
533475: 304 Not modified since last retrieval
53: 400 Bad request
85: 404 Document not found


That is almost 60GB of traffic with only 138 pages that they might capture for themselves!! Anyone on this board able to cover 60GB of traffic with 138 viewers ??? And these are exactly the kind of pages that they are hosting, tgp galleries, so I can't see the traffic being that much different, but even if there was 100 X more 404's I still don't see how they could pay just the traffic bill, let alone the rackspace and hardware needed to run a large freehost!!! So if someone would please pull back the curtain, and show us how the great and wonderful OZ does it, we would all be indebted to you forever And no I won't buy that story that they make it off the webmaster list either
