GEO IP Banners

God DAMN they must pull for surfers, cause I see these FUCKING ads that say "San Francisco Wembasters" or whatnot and I'm scrolling down the page... and my first reaction is "WTF??? Hmm, interesting..." and then I realize I just got OWNED by a GEO IP ad.

So what's the scoop on these things anyway??

what's the scoop? Uhm.... they're ads based on a person's geographical location that's determined by your ip address.

What else did you want to know about it?

I'd love to know how to do this properly.. I've looked at it in the past, are they looking it up and caching based upon arin results? Or have they got some database already put together for this? I cant imagine looking this up live is very efficient..

It's a great tool, but far from perfect - the geo ad I keep seeing here on GFY always says "Montreal webmasters". I'm from Toronto. And the one in the sig of the post above me says "St.Catharines"... I'm thinking the St.Catharines webmaster community is pretty small.

There's tons of variables... In a lot of cases the result will be a suburb because that is where your ISP's datacenter is.

I am assuming sometimes it will be inaccurate depending on your ISP. For me, it tells me the correct city I am in but I know for others it could be off.

wtf... i live in montreal. the adultlocals ad says "gaithersburg" and fuzebox's sig says "arlington". i'm nowhere near MD or VA.

on the otherhand, j$tyle$'s graphics are correctly showing montreal.
