Ozzies: Sydney or Melbourne?

I'll move to Australia for about one year to work there, but I'm not sure which city is best...
I've been to Sydney once and I just loved it, but other ppl say Melbourne is better.
So what do my fellow gfy'ers from down under say??

What country are you coming from? You might want to research the climate in various states of Australia to see how it differs...

Brisbane might be too hot if you're from a place that snows in winter and considers 20 degrees an extreme summers day

good point man, I'm from germany and we have 30-35 degrees in summer, so that's not a problem.
Ok so more ppl say Melbourne and Brisbane??
Why is that?

Hm.
Sydney is very corporate and business like, in the CBD.
It prides itself on being very business-class and modern.
Its suburbs sprawl a hell of a lot, too. There are great suburbs, and not so good ones.

Melbourne is seen as more of 'the cultural' city. People have a lot of pride of the arts etc, and it's definately full of culture. There's a lot more diversity in the weather than Sydney (ie, it rains more than sydney, and is colder than sydney)

They're only 6 hours drive or 60 minutes flight, why not see both?

And yea, Brisbane is nice, too.

Brisbane - the climate - the lifestyle and the people

Of course if you don't need to live in a city come a little further north to the Fraser Coast - we walk on the beach every day - the temps rarely get much higher than low thirties C in summer and even in the middle of winter I rarely wear more than a pair of shorts. Fishging is great too.

We moved here from Tasmania - a place with a climate very similar to Melbourne and we would NEVER go back.

... I have backpacked australia for 2 years and have seen it all. my first choice would be brisbane and the beaches up and down the coast from there, best weather, best lifestyle ... but hey, all it needs is a good fuck and you'll like every place.

Most working visas are for 1 year in Australia.

We are in Brisbane and its great, reasonable priced real estate, nice green city, good weather and laid back people.

Haven't been to Sydney much, not since I was a kid anyway.

Melbourne I like, great for music if you like seeing a lot of live music, and the food is good too.

Go to Melbourne if you want the nightlife... If you want the beaches and tourist spots go to brisbane/gold coast...

6 hours? How fast do you drive?

(You would need to maintain an AVERAGE speed of nearly 150km/hr to do it in 6 hours...)

Melbourne if you want great clubs, restaraunts, culture, and variety.

Brisbane / Surfers Paradise if you want beaches and warm weather.

Sydney if you want a combination of both.

Of course they are the biggest cities and all the others are unique in their own way too.

Have a great stay when you are here!

brisbane is good if you dont want the BIG city experience, but still have alot of fun. Wide variety of clubs etc here still and like everyone else has said the weather is good and the beach isnt far away.

If you wanted a nice relaxed place yet with lots of atmosphere and culture check out Byron Bay, you will love it. Mixture of a backpackers/hippie/surfers town with the rich tourists aswell, but lovely beaches

Matt

Sydney rocks, u got all you need there.. You'll love that city!!!
Melbourne is nice also, but it's better climate in Sydney and more to do etc
Brisbane sucks, but Nosa and the area north of Brisbane rocks, also the beach strip south of (Gold Coast) is strongly recommended.
