I got my Windows XP !

Hey everyone, how many of you got your Windows XP yet ? I spent half the day yesterday reinstalling my old 98, so I have a clean slate to install XP today. I picked it up a little after 7am from Wal-Mart and I've been running for a short time.

Hell, Windows boots up MUCH faster now, it's quite a difference, that's really nice.

The menus are gonna take a short time to get used to and when you have multiple browsers opened, it now stacks them up into a pull up menu instead of having them all side by side.

I like how it tells you about all of the software/hardware conflicts that you're gonna have even before it installs, very nice.

Anyways, I just wanted to see how happy the rest of you are with your Windows XP. I know that I seem to be pretty happy so far, he he he. Bill Gates must be happy also, racking in $100 a pop, he he he.

XP is horribly unstable. Even worse than Win98. If you ever get the urge to try a real OS:
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/
or http://www.redhat.com

My Linux machine has been running since before Sept 11th without a reboot and I use it LOTS every day for everything from instant messaging to playing Quake. Try THAT with a MicroShaft product.

Heck, I don't know, I think that it's really stable so far here. I've been doing all kinds of stuff with it and it seems to be going great. They claim that it's more stable and to me, it sure seems like it to me anyways.

go to http://www.grc.com and learn about why xp is such a security risk. I haven't tried it, but from what I've heard it sounds ok, based on the 2k kernel and its optional for ntfs or fat 32, doesn't sound too bad. Who knows, just go for slakware and live a happy worry free life!

Hey Slick
"The menus are gonna take a short time to get used to and when you have multiple browsers opened, it now stacks them up into a pull up menu instead of having them all side by side."

That is an option, you can turn that off and have them side by side.. Took me a little bit to figure that out also...

Ive had xp for about 2 weeks, and I think I like it. It took some time to get used to, but its pretty cool if you ask me. I have 4 puters here all networked and the xp networking wizard made it a snap to set them all up. I still find the need to reboot every now and then, but heck it reboots in a second so what the heck, I also ordered the xp plus that microsoft sells separately, its pretty cool add on..
To conclude I'am still learning all about it, but no real problems yet.

Mass just pick up a good firewall like Nortons 2002 it was made for xp..I have it and its working very well...

Hey, thanks man, I'll have to go find that option because as of right now, it's starting to drive me NUTS, ha ha ha.

I don't know where you got this idea, maybe someone running a ripped beta. I've had XP running on a comp for 6 weeks without a reboot, even tested it by opening 70 windows without any problems. Still burns discs, even well downloading from the internet and running a video. This is M$ best OS yet.

What about that little thing all the IT writers were complaining about... If you change something in the system, XP reverts to a basic OS and you have to call Support to get a code number to get it back to the full version... Something to keep ppl from using it on more than one system is the excuse MS uses for that...

Installed it last week on my laptop, felt too flowery and the touchpad didnt have all of the functionality it did with win2k, was going to put win2k back on, then found out it wasnt backwards compatible, so i spent the rest of the week formatting the drive and reinstalling win2w + all my software...

did boot up quick tho...

Did you know that you could have switched the layout to something you were more familiar with as well as sped up the pointer speed(set to 50% by default I believe)

Wasn't the speed, I have a Vaio and there is this neat page scroll effect when you move your finger up or down on the far right side that wouldn't work, I tried updating the driver from the site, nothing changed

Gemini, you are right. XP does make you call XP if you change some of the hardware configuration or something like that. That just seems like too much of a hastle. Besides Microshaft is known for coming out with one product and 700 patches. I think that says something?????????

Try going to the ALPS site directly. They make the touchpad in the VAIO's. I've got one and fucking love it but I'm still running 2K Pro on it. Haven't made the move to XP on the laptop yet but I've got it on my new desktop and it is GOOD. Don't go for the home version though, it's castrated; you need to go for XP Pro to retain the functionality of 2K Pro.

Gates was just on Charlie Rose being his smug self more or less laughing that XP will screw you if you change something in the system just so he makes sure you don't use it on a second system. Never mentioned all the time people will spend on support calls when they get a new vidcard or something. No doubt he will figure out how to get money from the phone companies for all the new HOURS ppl will spend on hold waiting on a new ID code.

But all is not lost. The states involved in the monopoly case just hired a top attorney to go after MS on their own since Bushs' justice department let MS off. They haven't filed on XP but the idea is being examined closely.

And we complained that DOS cost us 35 bucks. Now its up to 300 for an op system that barely works as per Gates grand plan. Keep shafting the customers with shoddy OPs and they will keep buying the new ones. lol

Linux as your desktop operating system? C'mon, what sort of idealistic world do you live in? Linux is good for servers, but in the real desktop world, Windows is the best. And don't give me this stable crap/don't have to reboot in 40 years junk... what are you doing leaving your computer on all the time anyway -- do you purposely like to waste energy?

How do you install a program in Linux? What was that.... tar gunzip, ls dir rename copy src bin |-xvzf cd/ yada yada yada.

How do we do it in Windows...oh yeah, we double click on the icon. You stupid Linux dorks...go anal rape your stupid penguin.

Please, don't mention X-windows or KDE. That crap is about as stable as my Apple II GS.

Hey, go ./FuC3 Y0uRs3L5 you slash dot bitch Secure CRT motherfuckers.

office XP Pro really is the best microsoft OS ever, you can fully customize the look so it looks like a regular windows98, just browse to the options ..
i'v been running it for three weeks no without a single crash or lockup

about linux using as your desktop operating system : linux is very very very very stable , but not as a desktop operating system , i used to run RedHat , which is as buggy as any windows 9x

i use Debian Linux for servers because it is so fucking stable, uptime 125 days right now but as a desktop operating system linux doesn't even come close to Windows XP !

just my two cents

As far as you calling up Microsoft after changing items in your system. I think that the magic number of upgrades that they give you, is 6 upgrades. Correct me if I'm wrong, he he.

Hell, if my system gets that old where I have to make 6 upgrades, I'm just gonna pick up a new one, he he he.

Does this mean that if I purchased XP and twom months down the road decided that I wanted to change the sound card on my machine, I would have to call Microsoft?

No, you wouldn't have to. You have 6 things that you can change, so if you changed your sound card, put in a new modem, upgraded your video card, popped in a new cd burner, changed out a network card, added in some ram, THEN you changed one other thing, you'd have to give them a call which they'd just give you a code and you'd be back on your merry way.

6 upgrades on a computer is quite a few upgrades to have. People are making it sound worse than it actually is. Like I say before, if I have to change 6 things on my computer, I'll just go buy a new one.

Are you kidding me? I am forced dictation by the almighty fuckin' Bill Gates now as to how much and when I can change shit in my system??! Fuck THAT. I change shit around here all the time. I just swapped out mainboards last night. I WILL NOT ever be told by some corporate fuck how and when I do what I choose to my OWN equipment. 6 upgrades is alot? Yeah, maybe if you bought a fuckin' AOL packaged HP off the fuckin' shelf at Circuit City. Sorry bro.... I ain't buyin' the propaganda for even one second.

Can anyone tell me if it's any good or not?

After being used to 3.1 it is taking some getting used to.

Yeah, maybe if you bought a fuckin' AOL packaged HP off the fuckin' shelf at Circuit City. Sorry bro.... I ain't buyin' the propaganda for even one second.

Hey Bro, I hear what your saying, but you are in the small Elite group that build and constantly upgrade and alter your puter. This is all about biz and the almighty buck. XP maybe wasn't designed for the small percentage of people that fall into your category, it was designed for the Mass amount of puter uses that make up the rest of the puter user world.

I will keep you posted on my own personal experiences with the new XP as I use it a bit more, but so far I think I like it

It's not just about upgrades bro... what if your network card craps? It happens all the time... What if you just wanna jam another RAM chip in there? Hell, what if you got a removeable hard disk bay? Is XP gonna misinterpret that stuff as upgrades? That's just basic maintenance man...

On a more positive note, for those who get duped into using such a piece of junk, give it a while... the crack teams are already workin' on the situation and there should be a patch or some other way around all of it other than spending the rest of your life on the phone to Microsuck.

Heck, I'm not a novice computer user here, I've been using computers for MANY years now, I'm actually on my 7th computer. Sure, for someone like you, maybe you upgrade all the time, but for most people, they don't require too many upgrades.

I bought my current computer almost 2 years ago. It's a 1-Ghz Athlon with 256 megs of ram, 40-gig HD, Geforce video card, 4X4X32 cd burner. I'm not Mr. Upgrade man where I upgrade this and that, now that it's getting dated, I'm just gonna go out in the next couple of months and buy another loaded down 2-ghz P4 system with the works, like I did when I bought this 2 years ago.

Like I pointed out above, 6 upgrades is still a lot for most people and if it takes a minor inconvenience of a phone call to make to continue using an EXCELLENT operating system, then I'm gonna do it.

Sure, it's kind of a pain in the ass what Microsoft did, BUT if you were in Bill Gate's shoes, I'm sure that you'd all do the same thing yourself. He's being fucked outta money from people, so he has to take measures like that to protect what he has. Anyone out there would do have made the same decision.
