Yup, bought an Acura RSX all in cash. Salesman was expecting it so nothing special happened really. Was a bit shy of $40k.

I use personal checks. Done it several times.

I tell them if they have a problem with it, start prepping the car for me to take it home, and while its being prepped, they can take the check down to the street to the bank themselves and exchange it for a certified check.

I would have done a certified check but my bank (at the time, they abolished this bs recently) wanted to take a small percentage of the check to certify it. Believe it or not, actually withdrawing cash was cheaper. Since then, my bank has changed to a flat rate now. I probably would use certified checks now

Your fucking stupid if you did that. Ass-shit.

Here is what you should have done which is what i have done before.

Walk into a car dealership.
Find the car you like and sit down to talk price.
Lets say the car is 40k. Start bargining, say you plan to finiance with thier company, because the company will make money off the interest payments as well, they will drop the price to 35k, maybe even lower. Then agree to the price and agree to come in the next day with the down payment check and etc, then come in tomorrow with 35k and say you changed your mind and want to pay cash, they cant say anything because the price is already agreed on.

But when you come in with a suitcase full of cash, you cant bargain down to anything because they know you have the money.

I bought it the week it came out in 2001 with every option, 5 year extended coverage and prepaid on the service calls. It came out to about 38k or so.

Can't buy anything for cash over £10k ($20k) here, or you get taken in and audited for Money Laundering to see if you obtained the money in any dodgy ways. So, No.

20k (AUD $) was about the most cash I have paid in person. I bought an Nissan ET Turbo in 1986.

I have always leased cars then in order to make the most of my capital and tax situation.

Cash no. Check, yes. Although, I was 22 when I bought it (looked younger) and he didn't believe I would pay it in full.

I bought my first 2 vehicles with cash (check). No big deal to me, but the dealers were impressed I guess.
But with the cheap financing available now it's stupid to pay cash, instead I got a better deal financing and can leverage my cash into more biz projects.

Financing a car, especially if via the dealership, is generally NOT a good deal - that low percentage, even 0%, financing often comes at a steep price ... better approach is forget the financing nonsense and instead negotiate hard and be prepared to walk.

Anyways, cash is most often the best way to buy, since standard production cars are basically "consumables" - every car I've bought, I've paid cash (via personal check) ... quick and done.

I did that once when I was around 18 working as a busboy at a high end steakhouse... I would have this time, but I'd already dropped a ton of cash for 2 homes. Maybe next time!

Why in the fuck would you tie up so much money in something that is not an asset. I would take that 10,20 or 30k and buy something that would make me money monthly and appreciate in value rather than depreciate?

Why not lease or finance the vehicle and write off the payments? I know in the states you can get into most vehicles with very little down and there are more than enough companies out there willing to finance you.

DH

Most drug dealers know anything over $9,999 has to be reported by the dealership. If you are paying cash I hope you have paid all your taxes flawlessly for the last 7 years.

That is sooooo fucking wierd.. I was just about to post nearly the exact same thing...

Right when the RSX-S came out, I saw the commercial, thought the car looked fun, drove to the dealer and they had a black one all decked out on the showroom floor. The dude asked me if i wanted to drive one, i said "no thanks, i will take this one", wrote a 30k check and i was driving it home about 1.5 hours later. I even left my old Acura Legend there on teh side of the road at the dealer.

Then I dumped about 18k into aftermarket parts, had the "RSX of the month" at clubRSX.com for about a year straight, then sold it.
