There is an important lesson here for any small service or content provider. If you're good at what you do then you will get behind but cutting yourself off from the world while you catch up is like giving yourself the kiss of death.
In a business like this where so much work comes in from personal recommendations it is pure insanity not to be available to at least talk to potential clients. If they can't talk to you when they need work done then they won't come back when you are ready to talk to them.
The other important thing to do is to even out your cash flow and you can't do that if you cut yourself off from the world while you get caught up with a backlog. If you do then you will find yourself in the same situation that Tootie mentions here - she says she is working her nuts off but she now has no income.
If you can't even out your cash flow it doesn't matter how much work you get, you won't survive or you will be constantly coming back to boards like this one begging for work because you can't feed the kids.
