Has anyone ever been to Cape Canaveral during launch?

When I was in States in 2002 I wanted to go there to see the launch. Its not every day you get to see the spaceship taking off.. Couldn't make it there in time.
Whats it like? Another sun in the sky? Any pics?

we were coming back from a cruise in 98 i think, and as we docked @ port canaveral, we saw a shuttle launch from cape canaveral, watching from the ship's main deck. It was pretty sweet.

i live only 2hours from the space center and i can see them in the sky from my front yard, its way too far to have a good view, but at night launches its a pretty cool thing to see, it looks like a distant airplane, only with a flaming tail. next time i find out of a launch i will record it and post

Should it be burned while falling through the atmosphere?

I was at Orlando International Airport a couple years ago when a shuttle took off. It wasn't exactly close but it still looked pretty cool.

My Uncle worked in the NASA press room and Grandfather worked at the Cape back then.. I was on base for the first 20 or so launches. That was back when they would cancel because a bird flew close to the launch pad.. So there were a lot of getting up a 4 am in the morning and waiting through all the traffic to only have to go home with no launch.

So launches are no longer a big deal too me but it's still cool to watch. I'll be happy when they start launching the Shuttle again.

The shuttle did not explode after takeoff recently. The last shuttle disaster was the ship breaking up on re-entry.

I have never seen a launch but I live near Tinker AFB and the shuttle usually stops here while riding piggyback on the back of a 747 Jumbo Jet on the return from California. Had it fly right over my house once while I was out in the yard. Amazing how something that big can ride on top of an airplane.
Here is a cool video of it taking off on the back of a 747

I've got a letter that rode on the Challenger on the next to last flight. It is postedmarked the day before takeoff, while in space (airmail lol) , and the day after landing. Definately something to keep.

I lived in Titusville for 20 years. That is basically where they launch the shuttle from. That is where you would go to actually see the launch.

I have seen several launches cause I grew up in Cape Canaveral/Cocoa Beach
It is a very cool thing to see especially the night launches it lights up the whole sky almost as if it's day time for a few seconds if you are close enough like I was. The ground just rumbles. And then when they do a land in Florida you always hear the sonic boom Its super loud. I may have some old pictures I will have to look.

This shot was taken from where I used to live. (about 85 miles from the cape)
I was using one of those cheap binocular cameras you see advertized.
