Asian Cinema - 'Brother'

Just watched it....liked it a lot. Anyone else into Asian cinema. One of my friends is majorly into it and has sucked me into his world recently. Apparently, I need to see Internal Affairs next.

If you talking about Takeshi - it's an old , but good movie.
Especially music, written by famous Joe Hisaishi

Yeah, I know it isn't a new film but new to me as it wasn't something I was able to catch when it had a cinema release here.

The "affairs" series will teach you much about how the hong kong mafia really works, and you will enjoy some of the best performances by really great actors that most white people will never know. I have all three on DVD here.

If you want some real fun, check out the japanese stuff. "Ichi the Killer" is a great way to see what happens when cartoons are made into movie, with very bloody (and actually somewhat humorous results)

http://www.ichithekiller.net/trailer/trailer_high.html

Warning! Extremely violent content. Contains violence against everyone, in all sort of manners that might offend american sensibility (in other words, women get hit, which these days is pretty much a no-no except for love taps). The trailer is more than enough all by itself :-)

apparently I am seeing 'The Eye' too...he bought that the other day when we went shopping and watched it when he got home and is telling me I have to see it. I used to wince at all the violence in Asian cinema but after a while it is more comic book style to me.

Sarah, it's funny... once you get past wincing, you can really enjoy the intent of much of it more clearly. Yes, it is made to make you squirm... but at least all of your senses are employed.

Takashi Miike's work is even more impressive when you consider how many movies he has made and still makes YEARLY:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0586281/

It's a little overwhelming to think about.

On the Brother DVD there is a long special Takeshi. We have Takeshi's Castle over here so I had known that he did light entertainment but didn't know the extent of which he is considered a comedian by the Japanese public. The guy has a heck of a back story.

It's called Most Extreme Elimination Challenge over here and it's just about the funniest thing on television.

I have yet to see a Takeshi Kitano movie I didn't like.

His remake of Zatoichi is genius...

Didn't he do that movie where all the kids are brought to an island to kill each other until the last one is standing too? Can't remember the japanese title but i think the translation title was "Battle Royal" or something like that...

Brother is fairly good, but most of his other stuff is better... especially Sonatine, Hana-Bi and Zatôichi.

Far-L: Battle Royale isn't directed by Takeshi Kitano, he just acts in it.

For really great Japanese cinema, check out stuff by Kenji Mizoguchi, Yasujiro Ozu and (ofcourse) Akira Kurosawa. Old, but still really, really good

Thanks for the correction!

I am a big Kurusawa fan too... Seven Samurai is one of my top five favorites of all time.

Sonatine is featured with the DVD of Zatoichi btw.
