For mp3's it's done by adding a url to the mp3 tag. I used to do it a long time ago but can't remember the syntax. Look it up on winamp's forums.
As for avi's, it's done with a script at encode time. Windows media encoder
does it easily (look up how on google) but... scripting is turned off by default in newer versions of windows media player. This trick is getting to be obsolete.

Just so you know, the winamp trick only worked if you had winamp's browser open. It may still work that way, test it

Yes but you can rename the extension to .avi or .mp3, and windows media player will still open it. Works great with filesharing.
