U.S. military officials say a television cameraman killed in Iraq Monday died in a gunbattle between Marines and insurgents, contradicting an account from his news agency.

Dhia Najim, an Iraqi freelance cameraman working for Reuters, was shot and killed in the town of Ramadi, west of Baghdad.

U.S. military officials say Mr. Najim was hit by a bullet in the neck while taping a clash between Marines and insurgents.

But Reuters says video pictures taken at the time of Mr. Najim's death show he was shot by a sniper and that there was no fighting at the time.

The press freedom group, Reporters Without Borders, has called on the Pentagon to make what it calls a proper investigation.

Must have been another mistake.. like all the others, namely all the bombing errors and of all, only one was admitted to be a "mistake" and attached with the words.. "we apologise for the bombing and that this may have killed innocent people".

I like that word "may" - adds flavor to a non-apology.

You cant tell anything from that video, without knowing the details.

He didn't have any media garb on, thats obvious. From my view without knowing any details, it looks like a guy coming out from cover about to shoot a shoulder launch missile. Mind you the sniper has a much better view.

In fact look closely , after he gets shot theres some text then it cuts back to the video and a man runs in from the bottom of the screen. Now look thru the window and you can see a man walk by with the same shirt on , and he looks like he is holding a missile launcher.

According to NATO law, if your not wearing the Approved Nato Combat Reporters Identification you can be considered a combatant.

No joke, ever seen people combat reporting in the middle of a street wearing a big WHITE runners pinny that says PRESS on it?
