Not exactly true... but close. It was called the Gold Rush Years.

However we had a different set of problems. Good hosting was EXPENSIVE. I remember some ISP's had bandwidth overage charges of $1 per meg which is over $1,000 per gig.

There were hosting providers promising unlimited bandwidth, but when you would put them to the test with lots of traffic they either shut down your site or throttled your site back so it crawled at a snails pace. I went through at least 10 hosting companies my first year because none of them could deliver what they promised.

I had to pay $2,000 - $3,000 per month for hosting that today would cost $50.

Then you had crooked sponsors that would set up fly-by-night programs and never pay. Since these new sponsors paid monthly and even then several weeks after the month's end, by the time everyone was clued in you had lost thousands of dollars. We didn't have GFY to help us out but we did have the GBU list (The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly), but I still got screwed by sponsors on the Good list.

You have to remember that this was all new stuff. We had to invest thousands of dollars for several months before seeing a dime of return. Most of us thought the feds would shut us down anyday and we would lose everything. Now you can get a simple site up for under $100 (domain and hosting cost) with a decent adult host and get a check from a sponsor within a couple of weeks.

Now don't get me started on the problems in the BBS days....

karlm 01-10-2005 06:13 PM

First check wasnt from a sponsor as such

But first sponsor payout was NC

Epoch/Paycom in 1998

$25,000+ for the first month in the biz. There was a delay due to some FD number being wrong, but Clay finally fixed it and the wire was sent. Was a bitch at first but seeing that deposit in my bank gave me major wood. Better and better since then.

I was at an ATM in a major city supermarket after midnight when I finally saw my bank balance go from $1200 to over $25k. I went straight home and packed all my shit and moved to the sticks. Then I jacked off on a cactus.

Never looked back.

Entropy 01-12-2005 03:34 AM

I think I got my first check from the RawLikeSushi program...

football6969 01-12-2005 04:10 AM

Grinder-

I hear you, I remember. I was with Netcom back in the day, 1996-1999 before they were bought out by Mindspring then Earthlink (fuckers). I had a co-located box. Major bandwidth and site hits.

Before Netcom, I had one of those $99/year deals. I took those guys out in three months with my bandwidth. Poor guys, they had to close/sell their contracts to another major player just because of me.

So this hard sell Netcom salesfucker calls me one day, demanding more cash. I'm talking thousands. I told him to stick it up his ass and hung up. But, think, there was no choice back then for high volume stable websites except maybe PSInet ($$$$$).

So ya, I had to call him back and accept his deal, had no choice. I was making 30k/mo, had to keep the server alive, and what is $3-4k anyway. Then Netcom/Mindspring/Earthlink dropped co-lo so I went somewhere else.

I pay alot more right now than most of the cheap places, but they don't say nothing about bandwidth or tech support calls. They have $200/hr gurus or even $450/hr engineers on call when/if you want/need to pay and solve immediate problems, most problems can be handled by the guy that answers the phone for free.

I have four servers with them, all new 2.8ghz++ top of the line, dual xeon etc...my bill is about $2k a month.

Hardware firewalls, daily backup, mysql DB's on other rented servers for all ccard info, the works. I can't complain. 24 hour 1-800 great tech support. They are never down. This company has never been mentioned on this board, but they are in the highest echelon.

xclusive 01-12-2005 04:17 AM

PS Grinder

Yes, it was the Adult Industry that paid for the R&D to do online sales for the B&M sites that eventually busted a couple/3 years ago.

It was the Adult Industry that paid for and wrote all the scripts, that elevated the Big3 processors, that made banks BANK.

We paid for all that, and now we are at the bottom of the totum. Constantly getting screwed by MC/V. If it weren't for Adult online, MC/V would be fucked, like we are being treated now.

It's not about chargebacks or high risk, they are just trying to cut us out of the loop to cash in on our efforts. Porn pays, porn is the biggest online industry. Porn websites elevated all the major ISPs, merchant banks, shopping carts, you name it. Yet we are still being held back 'by the man'.
