Why do people suck at picking gifts so much?

How do people manage to find the worst possible gifts to give so incredibly often?

I often am thinking the same thing when i'm at the mall....99% crap, who buys this shit? And then low and behold i see it given to someone. This is what's behind the incredible sales of the chia pet

Crappy gifts aren't that bad, really. Much worse are people giving the absolute worst possible gifts that quite clearly show they haven't listened to a word you've ever said.

E.g. giving a person who just quit smoking a lighter, giving someone who likes heavy literature new age pulp, etc.

I'll have to admit, I suck at getting gifts as well.

A bad gift is usually someone trying to be polite however, it often means, "I don't care that much about you."

A horrible gift is the equivalent to saying, "Fuck you."

Yeah as posted above I don't mind crappy gifts...I just hate it when someone who "knows" me like a family member who gives me something that just doesn't fit with my character at all.
I'd rather have a $1.00 item they found in a garage sale somewhere that shows that even at that moment they were thinking of me...than a $1,000 toy.

cause they buy it just to give something not to give me something that they know you love

                    They. dont. care.

They buy you a present because they are pressured by social standards to do so.

Nah. The people giving the worst gifts are the ones that do care, but are simply too stupid to understand what's good and what's not. They see you reading a book by Heidegger, then figure that you like philosophy and give you some esoteric new age crap.

People who don't care just give meaningless little gifts. Those aren't bad at all.
