There's more to freehosting than TGP galleries. More fool you if you are not sharing the load and making use of the more reliable free host services.

Free hosts are great for building your network and many now DNS your names. I have over 300 accounts and could not have built a solid SE network without them.

mainly lack of money...lack of knowledge, lack of the proverbial day job to pay for hosting...

hmm, maybe the love of getting hard work redirected? ;)))

Been using them for over 3 years. It takes more work to find one that is reliable, but they are out their. It doesn't help that there are folks that scream - "Free hosts suck!" - yet they haven't even used them that much.

I see many posts that rag on freehosts about how they steal traffic, they pop consoles on purpose. The truth is that out of all the one's I have used, I have not seen dishonesty. Maybe some slow servers, or large banners, but that is the price you pay when using them.

Most tgps have freehosts banned because of popup consoles and such. I run a tgp and yet to have a console popup on one. Unless of course the person that built the gallery, forgot to load the full size pics.

Bottom line, free hosts aren't dishonest, at least the ones that have been around for awhile and run it honestly.

Yup Ammo, and you never see the Freehots owners on hjere screaming about cheating webmasters (and I know from running a freehost that there are a lot who use pics that are over 125K, try to get the surfers to totally ignore the ehadings by putting cute phrases like "don't click the above links, they don't go anywhere" or 50 linebreak tags at the bottom of their galleries...and you gotta love the stolen pics, the kiddie porn and other illegal shit).

Any freehost providers want to share horror stories? We could probably have quite the lengthy thread....

The list of honest freehosts starts and ends with hosts like smutserver, lightningfree, stynk. There are a lot of other good ones too, but those are the top dogs. I use smutserver almost exclusively for my freehosted sites. Why? DUHHHHH! Anyone that asks why had better do some hard thinking about life, because it ain't rocket science.

I'll say it again... DUHHHHH

What's the difference if I pay $100 bucks a month for paid hosting/bandwidth ect or if I freehost and give up part of my traffic? nohting, except the cost of paid hosting is fixed. Freehosting is free in that I have no bills whatsoever. The money I make from it is all mine, and NONE of what I make must go on my CC to pay for bandwidth.

Other benefits: I don't have to worry one witt about hotlinking assholes with freehosting.

If I can get 3k/day of hits to a freehosted site, I'll make some money from it, period. Would I make more if it was on paid hosting? Maybe, but then there's those bandwidth bills again, so in the end it really all evens out. If I can have 15 or 20 such sites on freehosts making money, then where's the big mystery as to why anyone would use them??
15 sites
20-30k hits per day
$100 - $200 bucks per day (sometimes more)
NO bills

Dare I say it one more time... DUHHHHHHHHH

Im not sure how many free sites I have floating around on freehosts but there must be alot I ran out of room on 4 proncity accounts years ago and I still see sales from those old sites. Its just numbers if they get 1 sale a month each then you need 500 of them. The good free hosts are more reliable than most paid hosting who seem to come and go if I would have loaded all those sites on a paid host I would have lost them a long time ago. I still mirror alot of sites and galleries It dosent take much time and you can make more money.Used correctly your a fool if your not useing a free host.

So, CDSmith is making a good $40k salary off of freehosts. But you know what the bad thing about that is? The freehost may disappear at any time. It's unlikely in the case of SmutServer, but hey, shit happens. Of course there's a way around it happening that anybody hosting their own domain will already know.

The thing that I dislike about free hosts is the traffic leak, especially where high quality traffic is concerned. When we're talking AVS that usually converts 1:10 to 1:50, that's quite a chunk of income going down the shitter. ALL of the premium stuff should always go onto paid hosting.

Paid hosts have been known to crap out as well from time to time. They get hacked more than freehosts do I'd wager, because of the pay sites they host. Remote hosting is a gamble by any stretch, no doubt about it, but if you choose your freehost wisely it doesn't have to be a problem.

Quote:

Last time I checked, many freehosts now host domain names.
Also, let's say my freehost craps out never to return. So, what's stopping me from uploading my site to a new freehost, sending out a quick email to all my trades with the new URL, and I'm back in the game? Again, this isn't rocket science, I've done this more than a few times over the past few years. It's a little inconvenient, but so what? Downtime in general is inconvenient, and pay servers have it too.

What frosts my ass is when other webmasters look down their noses at you when you offer a link trade. Some people have an elitist mentality about the stupidest things. I'll trade traffic with freehosted sites any time, as long as the site looks tight and the webmaster is on the ball. I don't judge anyone by where they host, because that's for idiots to be doing.

And for the record, I run sites on paid hosting as well. Just a different set of rules, a different set of headaches to deal with. That's all, traffic is traffic.

Yeah, that link trade thing sucks. I started my TGP on free hosting over a year ago, and besides other free hosted sites, EasyPic was the only one that mailed back, willing to set up a manual trade. That's something to respect.

Yeah... that's what I meant. Anyone hosting a domain with a freehost doesn't need to worry, the freehost goes to shit, they just switch nameservers back to paid hosting until they find another free host. But those promoting their site on the free host's domain should beware.

Is that really possible? Any site or gallery on a free host is just going to be plain ugly and confusing resembling a cheap banner farm or link farm - there's no way around it. Free hosted sites do not lose a signifiacnt amount of money or traffic to the headers and footers relative to the money or traffic they lose to the uninviting feel any freehosted site is naturally going to have. It's impossible to give a really good sales pitch or obtain an optimum level of productivity when you have all that crap at the top and bottom.

I won't send traffic to free hosted sites BUT once you have set up a link trade with my site -- you can use my CGI recip link to send traffic from ANYWHERE -- as many domains and as many freehosts as you want... consoles, exit, circle jerk, whatever... As long as I'm sending recip traffic to a quality site. I don't do ratios and shit like that -- my code is proprietary -- but I will send you back a fair amount of clean non-blind traffic.

Hmm in other words -- why don't you all add my link to your free hosted pages and some quality converting recips from me back to your main site. ;)

What I hate is the TGP's that say NO FREE HOSTS. I understand that there have been free hosts that may cause problems in the past, but to blacklist everyone of them? Funny thing is alot of those tgps, either have webmasters that started out using freehosts, or they have never used them at all.

It pretty easy to say "Pay for your bandwidth and don't be cheap" when you have Mommy and Daddy paying all of your bills.
