:stop .NET paysites, what's your view???

I'm seeing more and more paysites with a .net extension popping up. I was always under the impression that the only way to go is .com but nowadays the domain names are so extremely saturated that I'm even thinking of regging a few .net domains.

What's your opinion on this?

dont do it! All the type-ins will go to .com later and trust me, if you have even a not that popular site, if you choose a good name, there will be a lot of type-in sales.

Yup, I had a mainstream site that was a .com and my competition at the time was a .net, so I would get at least 20+ sales inquiries a day looking for them.

What's your opinion on this?

The reason is because all the good dot coms are taken, regardless stick with dot com, most surfers are trained to put it at the end.

Hmmm ...I think it depends - if you have a very specific product of quality (something unique that some targeted crowd wants) - the domain is less important and .net is all fine....but if you wanna take up the battle with everyone in a more mainstream/general arena, definately .com

good question...

it is tempting to go with .net more and more, but the person who owns the .com name will be getting a big boost from you one way or another. the only way i would do a .net is

1) if it was an incredibly unique name that i absolutley had to have.

2) if the person with the .com registered the name a while ago and does not appear to be using it anytime soon. if it is a name that is very popluar and in heavy use, i would avoid using it because confusion between the two names will make it harder for you to brand your name in the minds of surfers. confusion is the enemy of good marketing and branding.

some very good replies here...

I have to agree with Andrej that type-ins would be a lost cause, but wouldn't implementing the ".net" in even the logo and stressing it time on time make a difference?

I'm all for .com myself but with the saturation these days it's getting harder and harder to come up with good names.

I think more and more websites will use .net in the future!
If you have to choose between .com and .net, then off cource .com!!
BUT if you have no choice, and still wants the name of your website..
Then use .net!!

Quote from a domain board...

"always think of .net as that large underpopulated neighbourhood next to the City, nobody wants to live there but, you can bet your life it's going to be the next suburbia."

I stick with dot coms for paysites and main sites, but use net,ws and others for galleries and other junk that won't matter as much
