SE Question

I already have a site that has been indexed by the search engines and it's got ok placement. I want however to make some changes to the HTML of the site that might screw up its ranking if it's recrawled by the bots.

If i add the META ROBOTS = noindex, nofollow tag, then obviously the robot won't crawl it again. My question is, if google's bot sees that tag does it:

(a)just ignores the new page BUT it still keeps the old page in the google.com index with its current ranking?

or

(b) just ignores the page but since the owner doesn't want the page reindexed it removes it completely from the google.com engine and will not come up when doing searches?

Thanks in advance.

i wouldn't mess with it,,,
i have heard the pages that get updated daily takes a hit from the engines,,,

i wouldn't worry bout the robot tags
seems like meta tags are not important any more,,, i know google doesn't use them,,,

It's not the only thing. I had a page with minimal link pop. get #1 for a search term that got ~320,000 searches a month.

=) I just don't wanna jeopardize it... but i need to update the page and i don't want it reindexed...

Google reindexes once or twice a month actually.

What the metatag= noindex does is make it so Google doesnt have a cached version. You know when you do a search at google, and all the listings have a "Cached" next to their listing. Well if you do the noindex meta tag, then it won't cache.

If you have a fairly decent rankig (i.e. top 20) then best bet is to leave it alone unless they are necessary changes. If you do have to change it, try to keep it minimal. But just keep an eye out when Google reindexes. Who knows, maybe the changes will give you a better ranking.

m0rph3us -

Why not just get a new domain name and make your changes there ?? That's how we do it, once your listed in google it's so easy to get your other domains listed also by just having the links from your site that is listed to your new domains, in fact it is almost better for google to find you as opposed to your submitting over and over for 9 months to finally get listed
