I wrote some experimental scripts myself that put heavy load on servers by trying to determine picture name patterns (001, 0001, 9 ... 011 , ...), demo is down, no hosting ATM, has killed my server too...

If you dont want to deny hotlinking in general, just do not name your pics 001,002,003,...jpg!
Use random names (uniqid, base64, md4, suzieonthebedlookinggreat.jpg, ...)

If there is pattern, there will be a script that recognizes the pattern.

Rotate through proxies.

Is your code working? If it does not, check to make sure that session management is being used for the delete. You may have to pass a cookie back up on the ack which is given to the popup.

having your images hotlinked is only for people who have no idea how to run their site who who wants their stuff hot linked, I have stuff that can be hot linked because I want it hot linked, but for galleries this is what you do.

Actually there is a way to fight this and win. Copyright your stuff. The hire an attorney, and sue the fuck out of them for copy infringment. You can and will win.

Not small stuff when I saw 3% of my bandwidth for a site go to fusker. as expalined above I took down my htaccess protection, prolly for a stupid reason. 3% would have grown. I'll replace the htaccess as it is the smart thing to do. Also will learn a bit more along the way. I'm not at the same level as some here on the scripting side etc.

Plus the thrill of Smokey and MattO teaching these guys a lesson is worth more than any drama thread.

Wanna help, list your htaccess file if you can. I'd be interested in what you did. Not sure that would be smart?? It would reveal your protection in part. You also have a firewall.

Or ICQ, I'd go through it line by line for my own education. I can use google and read the white papers too, but would appreciate seeing code in use...

That's all well and good, but it doesn't stop you from being hotlinked and I didn't even have to turn my ref logging off to hotlink you. Imagine all those sites that tell surfers to turn ref logging off, or the firewalls/virus protection programs that do it automatically.

I do not dis-allow blank refs, I just protect things that need protected with referrer protection..

You do indeed disallow blank refs because when I turn my ref logging off your images take me to

That means all the people using software that block refs and people that have it disabled are redirected. not the best way to handle the situation IMO.

To clarify, normal hotlink protection allows blank refs, but leaves a gaping hole for sites like pornolizer.org to capitalize on. The only surefire ways I can think of to prevent hotlinking at this point in time is using sessions of some type, or chopping your images into tiny bits and serving them in tables.

no I do not, your typing in either a 404 or your typing in a link that goes to a referrer protected directory, it then redirects you, per the htaccess in the protected directory to my index page.

Yes indeed it is very basic. Check again, you are redirecting blank refs. I am clicking directly from your gallery with ref logging disabled in my browser and getting redirected.

Yes it's all good for getting more surfers away from free content and to a sales page, but by redirecting blank refs you run the risk of being blacklisted at TGPs, etc.

Got it! Keep gallery submits to a min right now. Have a few TGPs and moving on to AVS. I'd prefer to go with just a few TGPs or use my own. Where I do place galleries now, I know the webmaster involved. Or buy spots. Then there is communication on details...
