On topic posting isn't illegal at all... blatant spamming (offtopic) is (like posting xxx in kids newsgroups).

I think posting XXX in a kids newsgroup would be illegal.

Post on topic, and post good stuff and you'll be ok.

anything with a url on it or in the message will generate complaints. and for some reason or another newsgroup posting seem to attract the password hackers.

spamming the newsgroups is illegal. Your ISP will cut you off for that.

Excessive cross-posting (same post to many topics), off-topic posting, posting adult on non-adult topics will get you canned at least by your ISP - it's a clear violation of most TOS

Are there not any news servers out there that let you post on topic pictures and videos without considering you a "spammer"? Pics and vids have URL on it, but they are always on topic content.

1st day i started in this filthy biz many moons ago i played the newsgorup game. It was for the most part an utter waste of time, though it did pull me some start up traffic. I wouldnt go near em these days, and in fact would be glad if they pulled the whole fucking lot. It cant be good for biz when joe user can get his rocks of with access to 1000s of pics on usenet.
Saying that before i was a webmassa I recall many a night sad wiv me pants doon trawling the binarie groups for sad fucks.

not true! usenet surfers are more advanced, but they are generally the crowd looking for a specific niche, if you have what they want they'll bite!
