Importance of fitness to webmastering

I think it's very important, both for your state of mind and your overall health. Due to the back injury I sustained at work back in '97, my overall fitness level has recently dropped off the map. I'm sick of feeling tired and achey all the time, and it's time to start really seriously exersising.

I've decided that an in-home program would be best for me this time around. I say "this time" because I've had many many gym memberships over the years. Going to the gym is nice for the social aspect for sure, but there are a few problems now. One being that every gym I've ever joined has eventually gone belly-up. The last one, called "absolute fitness" was a very nice modern state-of-the-art facility, my membership there was paid for by Worker's Comp, and I knew several people there due to my past work as a fitness trainer. But 4 months into my membership they closed their doors permanently. Crap!!

Then in the fall of 99 I re-injured my back, and since then I've put on some weight and am in the worst shape ever. Jogging no longer appeals to me, and riding my mountain bike is soon going to be no good either (winter, snow, ice, cold). I like swimming, but the nearest decent indoor pool with a weight-room is the Pan-Am pool which is miles across town.

Sooooo, I'm considering buying a bowflex. Does anyone have any experience with the bowflex? Does anyone here excersise in-home? Are any of you like me....a web-hermit? LOL
No really, it's time to get serious about fitness, so talk to me about how you guys do it, and if you know anyone that owns a bowflex and if it's worth the cash.

Would just like to throw in there for whomever reading this stuff that a good diet is needed as well, healthy food, proper amounts, etc.. I'm not an expert and am far from following a good diet myself, but I'm trying to figure out what works for me.

Agreed. I left that part of the equation out because I don't know anyone that eats better or healthier than I do. I take vitamin supplements every day plus ginseng as well, and I'm a good cook if I do say so myself. I also don't have the usual hangup that a lot of single people have, in that I don't ever mind cooking just for myself.

However, when not working out like I used to, and feeling back pain every day, sometimes one definitely doesn't feel like standing in the kitchen cooking. Ordering in chinese food and pizza and chicken etc. can really pack on the pounds. Time to get back into the fitness game.

I am pretty sure Consumer Reports did an article on the Bowflex. And as I recall it rated very well. I would also recommend a membership to Men's Health. It is an awesome magazine and has not only different workouts each and every month, but great recipes, and other helpful tips.

Sheesh, my diet consists mainly of Pepsi, microwave popcorn, pizza, and cookies...

CDSmith, my friend bought a Bowflex about 6 months ago and he LOVES it. He's a basketball player so he's already in good shape, but when he's not on the court or at school he's at home flexing his bow. He says he's tried other home-exercise equipment and they just don't work the muscle groups (or whatever) that he's looking for.

Indeed. I've lived with this injury for nearly 4 years now, and when I trained for those four months at "absolute fitness" I designed my own program specifically for this injury. It was working like gangbusters, but they closed on me. Later I returned to a different job at the hospital for 8 months, and got re-injured. No exercise after that, but I did throw myself and all my time into building my online business, so something good came out of it.

But I'm tired of being out of my usual shape. Thanks for the input on the bowflex, it does look like a good peice of equipment for sure. Out of all the home equipment and gadgets I've seen advertised lately it looks to be the best.

All depends on what you want. Mass? Weight loss?

Myself, I shoot for nothing but mass.

So... I use the HIT method of lifting.

Hmmm. A friend of a friend owns a bowflex, and he had a guy there that said the same thing. This guy said his max bench was like 275 for 6 reps. So the bowflex owner hooked up 260 lbs-worth of those flex-rods and let the guy try it. He couldn't even do one rep, largely because he had to stabilize the weight as well as move it. All he could handle was 200 lbs of bowflex resistance, and the damn thing goes up to over 400lbs of that same resistance. My max bench with free weights was 306, and with a machine stack I did 350 (for six).

So I'm thinking this bowflex offers the high end resistance I'm looking for, and you can work every muscle in your body with it. I like the lat pulldowns, cable-rows, leg presses, and cable-curl exercises. These are exercises that a bench and some free weights can't offer.

As for the extra optimizers you mentioned, again, been there done that. The days of being a juicefreak are gone for me, and I've never taken a steroid in my life. The so-called natural ones still fuck with your system, don't kid yourself. They're expensive, and they're just not worth it for someone that merely wants some general overall fitness back in their life (like me)

KK -- Agreed. However, simply walking my dog every evening isn't quite doing it for me, and I get bored with other things like jogging pretty quick. The only things that have held my interest over the long term are kick-boxing, hockey, mountain-biking and working out. But due to this back injury I'm becoming limited in what I can do to keep fit. I no longer teach kick boxing or am affilated with the club, I sold my hockey equipment a few years back, so I need something that can help me get an overall fitness thing going.

I've never used a bowflex, never even seen one other than on tv, so if anyone has actually used one or owned one speak up please.

I was also considering the total gym, that Chuck Norris contraption, but it doesn't look like it's the one for me. I need something that can handle me, I'm 6'4", 245lbs, the equipment I use has gotta be solid stuff.

Andro stack is not what it is called. What happens is companies mix other "things" to act as transports. Its called Andorstene, but they have all kind of mixes of Andro. The mixes are called "stacks".

My self i used to do electrical work and was very active but when i got married i went from tinkering own computers to doing it full time and i sat on my ass all day, also getting married killed the gym work i used to do.. i guess it was the i already have a woman why keep going lol.. but now i am in unbeliable bad shape.. worst ever.. i am like cd and decided to do something about it.. i got a puppy lol.. and my wife and i go walking with the pup every night, each night increasing the distance we walk. i have also gotten involved with Martial Arts.. not to kick ass but to build discipline.. it has helped with my work and also with my mind.. i was on Zoloft for stress and since i have ben studying Martial Arts i have started weening myself off of it.. but i think it is totaly important to get back inshape for myself because we are planing to have a child in the nex couple of years.. well im done.. if any of the rest of you are into martial arts hit me up

To tell you the truth, right now I do not really know.

Like I said previous, I use a variant of the HIT method. Meaning, I lift heavy but short and no more than three sets per muscle group. Some people take it to extremes and only use 2 reps to failure, but most people agree (and this is what I do) is to get 6 to 8 to failure. 3 sets, done.

So how much can I bench? I do not know, 1 rep of 400 lbs doesn't do anyone any good. I am tryin hard to become a superfreak... so I have different goals and different methods than most.

Ahhh you lazy bastards I still drag my ass out to the bus stop, take a 25 minute ride (each way) to the gym in Mississauga and work out for 2+ hours a day.

My workout consists of about 1 1/2 hours of weights and then 20-30 minutes of running on the treadmill. I went from 260lbs down to 210lbs (still have 20 to go). You just gotta get into it!! When people start to tell you how good you look and chicks eye you up and down it definetely motivates you.

I take multi-nutrient vitamins and am now looking for a good supplement that will increase muscle mass and still help me lose weight.

Any suggestions?

What your doing is called over training. You will never gain mass unless you allow your muscles to rest at least 24 hours.

Mass and lose weight at the same time? Anyone will tell you that is almost impossible. It has to be one or the other. But then again, are you talking about MASS?

What you can do is do your cardio in the morning before eating anything.

Start living off of tuna, chicken, and myoplex. No carbs or processed sugars several hours before you go to bed.

It will be a more of a gradual weight loss, but you should see good results. Starving yourself and severely overtraining (like you are doing) is only gonna fuck you up in the long wrong. Its such a horrible misconception that you can work out everyday like that. Browse any bodybuilders page and look at their program (they always post them), you will never see them working more than one bodypart more than twice a week MAX.

Hey CD...

I love swimming too -- but it's always hard to get access to a nice indoor pool... even in Florida the water gets cold.

Here's something that has worked for me lately... Just stop driving. I've been walking everywhere -- every time I get hungry I walk about 2 miles to my favorite restuarant or bar ;) Some days I make two trips downtown so that's about 8 miles total... It's been about a week and a half now and I have a lot more energy and I can see all my abs ;) I guess it's not recommended for everyone but has worked for me -- no more gas money. I don't waste time driving to the track to run anymore. Also when you're walking you meet a lot more people -- I've gotten rides home from girls twice already (once from a bar and once from the library) -- and no I didn't ask these girls if they could drive me home 8p -- anyway walking really helps me think and come up w/ ideas. Also I read or chat with ex-girlfriends on the cell phone while I'm walking ;)

Lab, when I used to be working my heaviest, I too would go my own way with my training style. For reps, again, only after I've been training lightly for a few months to get back into it, once I'm back up to full swing I like to do about 3-4 different movements per muscle group. In each movement I'll usually do 3 to 4 sets, the first set is higher reps, the last set is only 2-4 reps and higher weight. From time to time I might try a single rep at the end with a slightly higher weight, but nothing that will risk injury. I guess that's more of an ego thing. (wanting to know how much you can do etc)

I finish off the heavy workout with like 3 sets of 50-100 crunches and more stretching. The warmup is 20 minutes on the stationary cycle and stretching.

Labret, got any place where I can find good info on a diet with proper training for Weight loss mainly?

I used to train... and whenever I would be doing cardio and weight at the same time, my weight would usually stay around the same level... sort of transfering a bit of fat into a bit of muscle... (I mean, I'd lift 20-30% more, but still weigh the same)


I'm just thinking of getting back to the gym on the stair / cross country ski machines...

but this time, I'd like to put myself on some better eating habits, as well as maybe some kind of suplements or natural shit that helps weight loss...

I mean, I do not lack muscle mass I believe, just that they are well covered hehe

so if I take care of the fat, that'd be a good start..

any idea?

I'm like 6'3" 250-270 pounds (been a while I haven't check, I'm usually in between these hehe, depending on my weekly activity =D)

Thats a tough one. I try like hell to maintain a strict way of doing certain exercises on the right days etc etc etc.

Its hard, certain parts just suck to work. For instance I hate working "back"... really hate it. So I tend to neglect it more than I should. I am obsessed with shoulders and chest. I want trapz that make my neck disappear. So I tend to work those areas more. And like you said, doing certain parts always works other parts. Like the way I do my chest, always makes my triceps and shoulder burn. So I figure fuck it... its usually a chest / shoulder split, which certain shoulder exercises indirectly work the back. Then next time I have to do bicep / back split which I hate, cause I hate back.. so I indirectly neglect biceps... so have to compensate. Damn, so many variables that make my lifting schedule suck sometimes. This job doesn't help either when you have some troubles and cant make it to the gym for a week so no matter what muscle you work next time, its gonna be sore as hell, so now your schedule is out of whack. I have to take it day by day almost. I am fortunate enough to have a smith machine and the typical freeweight set so I can hit them, but I love some of the cable machines at the gym cause the really let you target. I am ranting. And then diet plays the most important role and you know what sitting in front of a computer for 12 hours a day will do to that. So to answer your question... I have no set schedule, too hard to maintain. I just lift hit and take it day by day.

Usually 2 to 3 exercises per muscle, mixing them up. Weight that is 6 to 8 reps to positive failure.

I dont know if any of what I said just made sense. Im not gonna proofread it either.

I dont do any cardio cause I am too paranoid of muscle loss. I should however.

Whatever you do I always find it hard to start. When you get in to the training it just goes on. But getting your ass away from the computer is the hardest thing.

Before I got injured I used to work out 3-4 times a week, but now... I really should but its hard getting it going.
