Yes he made it inbetween American Graffiti and Star Wars. I saw it for the first time about 15 years ago. I believe this is the future GW Bush envisions.

Yeah I think it's one of his best movies...

Although I haven't seen the new release.. I'm afraid he went and mucked it up like he does every time he re-releases a movie

The new cut is actually really good. He just added a few cgi shots to make the underground world seem a lot bigger and more full of people.
Plus the quality of the remastered video is crisp as hell.
I saw it in the theatre when I was a kid and it really messed with my head then.
