As a programmer, how do I build kudos?

Hi Guys,

I am a lowly programmer looking for work in the thriving industry of porn.

I know I am very good at what I do (PHP, MySQL, JavaScript with a speciality in horizontally distributed systems and a good efficiency/maintainability mix). However, I also realise that I have no 'cred' in this industry.

So, anyone want a programmer (did I mention I was very good ;) )? I am willing to show that 'I am committed'

Well, I do have one project that is currently public that people might want to look at.

I have posted it previously (kinda shameless I know).

http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=412099

I am also happy to do some small projects and post advice (although I haven't seen a huge requirement for that on GFY yet).

I'll share with you an idea to massively boost your exposure and credibility.

First, look around at the major CMS products that have plugin-extensible architectures. Concentrate on the open-source solutions. Develop a couple of plugins geared to the adult industry and release them to the GFY community. Offer commercial upgrades or support and you're on your way. Right now, most TGP software, picpost software, traffic trading software, hotornot scripts and so on are standalone yet there is a real trend toward managed websites. Most of the open-source and commercially available CMS software lacks the proper modules for operating adult websites. The CMS products geared specifically toward the adult industry tend to be very pricey and/or limited in that they ONLY support adul-specific tasks. Bridge this gap and you have a good basis for your business.

A few ideas for XOOPS (http://www.xoops.org) plugins:

Link indexing/rating where the site owner can add all the links himself or allow submissions from users. Should include some kind of graphic spice, such as stars for ratings or different images to represent the links, the way you can select an icon for your posts here.

Multi-user blogs with blocks (see XOOPS site) for top rated blogs, most active blogs, newest blogs, etc.

A fully integrated hot-or-not type program for XOOPS or another CMS.

Some good advice but i believe there are plenty of content management
systems already available at a decent price, that are well tested etc.

i'd say when u get contracted for a few projects (thru elance.com or scriptlance.com) keep a portfolio of your work & request testimonials when complete. don't say a project will take you 2 months then don't deliver for 6 months+ (this just happened to me... FUCK OFF). its better to say 6 months then deliver in 2.

if you can code a 8 headed hydra worm with multiple platform sniffing along a 1024 bit encryption -- all while maintaining a load level on a horizontally distributed system, you're my guy - otherwise, sorry.

While I do agree that there doesn't appear to be many adult-targeted CMS's on the market, I don't immediately see the value in creating one (especially plug-ins for an existing CMS).

Most (if not all) of the CMS's that I have seen do not scale well to more than a few dozen users on a standard server at the same time. They are definitely not up to millions of hits per day in my opinion. And, while I agree that I have just created a reason for designing a new CMS, I don't have the funds for a significant R&D project at this time. However, if someome else is willing to put up the funding for this project, I'm all for it.

The fact that you don't see the value in this reflects your inexperience in this industry, not an actual lack of value. This is a definite void in available software.

As for your comments about "millions of hits", that's not really a problem. It's a common misconception that adult sites are all melting fibre with their zillions of visitors but that's not true. There are some sites and some types of sites that rely on sheer volume but there are many sub-markets in this industry that do not.

I didn't say there were not CMS products available. i said there is a lack of support for many of the tasks common on adult websites.

SpaceAge: I really didn't mean to offend by my comments. I just really don't have the funding to be able to spend months on development of these modules which you so obviously pointed out I don't know about.

My inexperience in the adult industry does not make me a bad software developer. I have a proven track record in mainstream development for being able to quickly understand business systems, develop complex models and then implement these.

Take a chill pill and relax. I am looking for advice, not to have my head ripped off for not completely understanding a concept.

I still don't completely understand the value of the couple of modules you were talking about but, if you would like to explain them further, I might get it.

Establishing yourself as a developer in this industry isn't overly easy, Alot of people have been scammed, or have had inferior products delivered, delivered 6 months too late, etc...
Basically, the best thing you can do is take on some low profile jobs, and start establishing good relationships with webmasters, and if you provide what you promise, when you promise it, then the work will be there.
As far as specifically establishing a positive reputation or 'kudos' as you referred to it as, that just takes time, do enough small things for people and if they like it, they'll talk, recommend you to their friends.
Most of my business comes from repeat customers, so the best thing you could possibly do is treat every job like it's your own, and it's the most important thing you have going. Give your customers good service, help them when they find bugs, or they don't understand something, etc... and things will fall into place.

In summary: treat it like a business, do what you promise, when you promise it, and if you can't, at the very least attempt to rectify the situation.

While i'm never fond of more competition, i'll still wish you good luck
