someone posted a link the other day to a list of the greatest disasters in modern times, and there was a cyclone in bangaldesh in 1970 that killed 300,000 people. This one's pretty bad, but it has a ways to go to be the greatest loss of life since th e atomic bomb.

There were some droughts with losses in the millions. Many of us remember the 1984 famine in Ethiopia that killed about one million.

Read something about that in University, but it's not part of the North american public school Curriculum. Our curriculum focuses on the Jews, not the Ukranians, Blacks, Arawaks or Caribs (Caribs Wiped out by Cris Columbus). Any links for more details about this? Ethnic cleansing around turn of the century? How long ago was that link with the greatest natural disasters?

yepper i know its not taught in high school i used to speak up when we were only talking about the jews. kinda sad how just because Stalin "stopped" the nazis in Russia all is forgiven and brushed under the rug. that is a main reason why i do not feel sorry for many other races of people.

Quite a few bombing raids over germany (eg Dresden), killed more in a single attack than the atom bomb

Most of the 20 million deaths in the USSR were caused by Stalin in the great purges the german army only killed about 2 million....(all in all Communisim has killed over 100 million since it started.)

Rwanda killed several million (the Iraq war hasn't even come close, even by the most left wing/anti-american standards)

There have also been quite a few natural disasters (earthquakes, typhoons, etc...) that have killed quite a bit more than 100k

Having said all that.....I still sent money to the Red Cross today.....that situation is HORRIBLE.

the thing with natural disasters though is that the people that get killed did nothing wrong and it was no one's fault.. You just go for a swim and end up dead on a balcony 2 floors above....

For some reason everyone seems to think that the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan caused a huge loss of life during WWII. While the loss of life was huge, more lives were lost when the US firebombed cities in both Japan and Germany.

Russia didn't win WWII. Yes, they held the Eastern front, and they sure did loose more lives by far than any other country. But keep in mind that American supplied Russia through out the war, and landed on D-Day when we were never really attacked by Germany. Imagine the US doing that today and the uproar it would cause.

Japan won WWII. Stop and think about it.

I saw some stats somewhere yesterday, that across the world in the 1990's over 100 million people died in those 10 years due to war.
