Pennywize and AOL...The shit just doesn't mix

It seems like it's costing me more headaches and money than it's worth. I swear I'm sick and tired of fielding emails from pissed off customers and from ccbill after a pissed off customer contacts them and it's all because some AOL customers have a bad time with the software. Why can't this shit be fixed? It makes no sense.

I just had another legit pissed off customer cancel over this shit.

What have you got your threshold set at? I had the same problem with aol users but changed the threshold a little higher and haven't had a problem since. If someone share's a password on a board or something it'll still get turned off pretty quickly, but allows several different ip's before blocking the account.
Also do you have a page set up to direct the members to after their password is locked explaining that aol changes the ip address and to contact you if their password is locked and they didn't share the password.
I keep a pretty close eye on my pennywize stats and tweak it as necessary, haven't had any problems or disgruntled customers in months.

What should the threshold be set at? I use pennywize for my sites too.

I have my threshold set anywhere from 6-8 subnets on all my sites. But it's also important to keep an eye account for those AOL users. This usually works best for me.

6-8 should work, thats daily so few users are logging in that many times a day. If a user gets blocked and is on AOL or another isp without a static ip I'll set them up with unlimited and than just keep an eye on things for a little while to make sure they're not sharing.

Make sure you redirect them to your own page, explaining reasons for being blocked. If they are AOL users put a not to try again in 10 minutes (or whatever your ip block time is set up for).

I set my threshold little higher than 6-8, more like 12, if someone is sharing the password on a board, it will hit that easy.

You can much say that "Anything and AOL...The shit just doesn't mix"

I got rid of pennywize because of this and many other problems. Went with the software Strongbox, and have never looked back.

i too used pennywize for so long, but had to drop them about 3 weeks ago. same issues, aol users, CCBILL threatening to deactivate my account because of the complains. setting the treshhold to 10 did not solve a muthafuckin thing.

now, check this out. after all the good shit that i heard about strongbox, i switched to StrongBox this week. same fucken issues. it blocked a major AOL proxy which made my weekend just hell. then CCBILL goes in there and tries to investigate shit, then them too get blocked by the fuckin script. so they write me an email talkin about "i am violating their AUP". that they will deactivate my account within 24 hours. I email Ray, beggin him to configure the script properly, or at least give CCBILL an exempt account so they can access my fucken members area. nothing, fuckin nothing. I am not calling the dood no more. i am just sick and tired of this bullshit man.

you would think that after all these years, adult webmasters would have a decent protection script for their members area, but nothing. don't even know why these fucken programmers beggin for jobs all the time on the board are not jumpin on the occasion to make some money. i mean fuck, make a decent reliable script, i'll buy it from ya. enough.. i am going to hit starbucks and ponder on life...

I think that's my problem....I have it set to 4 subnets before they get cut off. I see no reason why anybody would have more than 3 in one day. Most of the people have only 1 subnet and MAYBE they'll have 2.

What do you have yours set to? I'll set mine to the same number.

i see a lot of sites are adding image verification thingy when members enter their password, i guess makes it much harder to steal passwords in the firstplace with a system like that

I've used pennywize for almost 2 years with not a single problem. I keep my thresholds at 10 subnets or 2 gigs per day and I have'nt had one single complaint or overage bill from my hosting company.
