I was a life insurance broker for 7 years, i've sceen morbitity tables dating back 100 years - the highest likly time for an older person to die if right after a major holiday like christmas. It has no effect on the mortality of people under 45 though.

my grandmother died just today, found out this morning.

God I'm sorry to hear that

Those things tend to happen during this time of year probably due to all the flu and the weather, not enough sunshine, depression... and yeah probably sometimes stress of family. Dec 10 last year I watched my grandpa go and it was fairly fast. He had cought the flu after breaking his hip and turned to pnemonia... and my Grandma several years earlier was a sudden heart attack and we watched her go about an hour before my sons birthday party. It definately affects you each year...

If you need anything at all, Scott...

lotta traffic accidents this time of year too

icy roads + bad drivers

then lots of old people have heart attacks shoveling snow this time of year

few other things that would contribute to higher deaths at this time of year

Sounds like a shitty Christmas Present. Sorry to hear about your loss.

I wonder if people try to hold on until the holidays, hoping to spend one more with the family?

I found an article for you but it supports what Sleazy has to say, not the other way around.

Dec. 13, 2004 - The holiday season may be hazardous to your health, especially your heart, according to a new study that shows death rates peak during Christmas and New Year's.

Researchers found that more heart-related deaths occurred on Dec. 25 than on any other day of the year among people not already in the hospital. The second largest number of deaths was on the day after Christmas, and the third highest peak occurred on New Year's Day.

Rest of article ...

When my grandmother was dying in intensive care they thought she was slipping away so many times...but she held out until I could get there. Shortly after she passed. The nurses on the ward told me they have seen it so many times that people seem to sense their passing and wait to see those they love. So maybe because of Christmas...family will be near and shortly after the holidays they let go and pass on.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather, it is hard to lose family members at any time, especially during the holidays.

i've sceen literatly HUNDRED of documents to back this up.

want to do something simple - check the obits on dec 24, 25, 26 and 27 - - you will notice a HUGE difference and climb in obits over those 4 days - dec 24 is actually WAY lower than any other day of the year.

Sounds reasonable to me. I believe you're right, being as you're experienced in the subject. I was providing the article for the person who was arguing with you about it.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother. My aunt back in Ireland was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of weeks ago. She had the surgery last week and we're waiting on the results. Should know by Thursday whether or not they got it all. It's definitley the shittiest time of year for something like this to occur. I mean, it's going to be awful at any time of the year, but it just seems worse somehow. I don't know.

CNN ran a segment the other day mentioning Dec 24th & 25th being high mortality dates. In addition to stress and other things this time of year that can weaken one they said another major contributer was that people were more likely to put off going to the doctor during the holidays.

Ohno. I'm so sorry Scott.

If there is anything you need please let me know. I couldn't imagine my grandmother passing away on Christmas or the day after. It would totally have ruined the holiday for me. As it is, I still miss her sorely and she's been gone for 7 years now.

*hugs* My sincerest condolances.

Stress!

And people do not want to bother the family with going to the DR. to get
chest pains and such checked out, so there is a higher death rate...

More people on the roads!

And just life........If you think everything is going good, why not throw a death in the family...Keep it real..

Scott.. sorry to hear about your grandmother.. I lost my mom 28 years ago today.. needless to say i'm sure my life is radically different from losing her at such a young age as it would have been were she there when I was growing up. My thoughts are with you.. it's a sad day for you and I both. I would give you a big hug in Vegas but I won't be there this year so i'll save it for you until Phoenix...

Sleazy,
I am very sorry to hear of your loss...
I lost both grandmothers last year, and I know how hard that is...

Sending many hugs and prayers your way.

Sorry to hear that.
Its always a bad time when family dies but at Christmas its so much harder. Our neighbours father died a week before Christmas, my sister in laws uncle died Christmas Eve and a family friend died yesterday. Its hard to celebrate Christmas when all the sadness around but when you have small children that don't understand you have to make it the best for them.
