According to that animation, land stopped the 20 foot waves like a Klingon force field.

Can anyone confirm that the waves were traveling anywhere near 500 KM an hour? The BBC reported that these waves can travel that fast.

That explains why so many people got hit by the waves. By the time they saw the wave it was too late.

Figuring the math here.

Each cubic mile of seawater weighs approximately 4.7 billion tons.

Mean ocean depth out there is about 2 miles.

The ground shift was 600 miles long.

Figuring a 10 mile width on the movement.

2 x 10 x 600 = 12,000 cubic miles x 4.7 Billion Tons = 57 Trillion Tons of Water was lifted up by the earthquake.

Bottom line on that equation? Don't fuck with Mother Nature.

What's even sadder about the whole thing is that so many of the people hit by the tsunamis had no idea they were coming.

Just a tiny bit of clarification here...

1) The wave tops on open sea are not much higher than 2 meters. That is why you do not notice them until they reach the shore.

2) The 500km/h speed is on the ocean FLOOR on OPEN SEA.

3) The speed drops dramatically once it hits shallower water, and the wave then builds up.

This of course does not make it any less dangerous, but just wanted to point this out so everyone understood.

It really works just like the tsunami you see in Deep Impact. Just a (little) smaller. 14m (which the highest ones were as far as I know) is still extremely high of course. And these waves do not just get 14m high and come russing to you, they start small, so you do not notice them and then they hit shallower water, pull all the water away from the shore and build up to 14m in a matter of seconds, and then just hit the shore.

this animation is geographically inaccurate. the epicenter of the quaque was in sumatra, way more south. the epicenter depicted here is located where the andaman islands are

just my 2 cents
