TOPIC * Anyone get divorced while in this business?

I going through a fucking terrible legal battle and my x's lawyer is trying establish a value on my business. Anyone go through this? I can't see how you can do it by seeing how much I pay google every month. I know he is trying to see if I use any money for personal items. But the thing that is fucked up is that I don't own any paysites or shit like that, every month it's different.

    Any experiences would be great.

declare bankruptcy, and open a new company in a different name after the legal battle. (note: i have never been through a divorce - just an idea since as you said you dont have any paysites or anything like that)

Yep, but luckily we each took out what we brought in! No fights, no custody battles (I let her keep the dogs). I was blessed. Heck, she even paid for the divorce.

Make yourself look very poor very fast. Divorce lawyers can ruin you financially if they get to all your assets. The legal bills alone can go into the 6 figure range and sometimes higher if you are very wealthy.

Are you actually a business? You might be better off looking at it as a job. Think in terms of a lawyer or someone with a client list. It is an income stream and not an asset. You are not trying to value her job? Otherwise tell them 3 months income is what it is worth and write her a check.

I went thru a nasty divorce. The lawyers fuck shit up man. Best advice I can give you is try to reason with her and reach a settlement amongst yourselves and tell the lawyers what to draw up. You leave it to them and it will take forever and in the end there will be nothing left. Explain that to her and she will come around.

I went through a nasty divorce years ago after being married to the bitch for 7mos. Her lawyers tried the same thing (value of my biz). My lawyer countered with how much would that biz be worth if I wasn't doing all the fukking work.

The divorce dragged on for an unbelievable 9mos. I initially offered her $60g (50% of assets) and the house, but she wanted some shit like $300g. So I stocked up on stuff for the biz, made "repairs" to hardware, bought supplies, etc....every month it went on my total worth dropped. In the end she did get the house, but a check for $1500 and had to pay her own stupid lawyer.

Bottom line: Would your business survive if you died today? If not, the spouse gets zero.

A few of my buddies are going through some of the same legal issues unfortunately... They are all getting taken to the cleaners too...

I'm getting married in 6 months, thank god my fiance is totally upbeat with getting a pre-nup. That way if we ever god forbid broke up we would'nt have to fight like dogs and cats and we could handle things in a amicable fashion.

This is what I did. Took me five years, but I finally got her to see the light after I had paid off all our debts and there wasn't really anything to fight over anymore. Don't even pay a lawyer to draw up the papers, do it yourself and file them.

EDIT - and DON'T GET MARRIED!

I believe the Donald said it best - get a PRENUP..

How do you break it to her?

Simple. Tell her your business partners require it of you, just as you require it of them, to protect everyone in the business. Advice I will never forget

always get a prenup if your going to marry. Don't fall for the "but our love is forever" bullshit woman put up. If they don't want to marry you with a prenup then just dump them and move on. Chances are she's just bluffing anyways.
