anyone here good with PC hardware?
i have a problem with my HP 750N
I have narrowed it down to the power supply fan. Making an awful noise! I have cleaned and cleaned, but it is still there. im assuming it will soon burn out and i will have to replace. Now, do i replace only the fan? or the entire power supply? also, where do i get parts from? I went to HP and didnt find much help, i looked only quickly though ... and what is involved? Do i need to pop/replace rivets? solder? or just screws? thanks.

Not worth taking the powersupply apart - just replace it.

Replace the whole PSU; don't risk it taking other components with it when it fails. Ideally you want a good brand, like Antec. Quality matters more than total listed wattage. Installing a PSU is very easy, just a few screws attach it to the case. But you should first make sure a standard PSU will fit that Dell case. Unfortunately these mass-manufacturers will sometimes use non-conforming proprietary components to discourage you from doing any repairs or upgrades yourself.

Call around to a few of the tiny computer repair shops. They usually have a ton of things hanging around including things from Dell. They might be able to hook you up quick.

There is nothing you can do about the fan, this is a common occurance in pc's. Just get a new power supply.

Get a quality power supply. 400W or above. The quality ones go for $50+.
Choose from Antec, Enermax, Thermaltake and few other quality brands Good place to shop is www.newegg.com - a choice for lots of hardware enthusiasts. - B |

you can fix any fan that is broken, just drop some lubricant on it and it will be fine, fans dont go bad, they just get dry and it gets hard for them to spin. ANY FAN can be fixed.

hp power supplies fucking suck ass. We replace so many of them at the the repair shop. First off, see if it is a standard power supply because HP likes to use small ass ones in their small ass cases. If it is a standard power srupply you can pick those up at pretty much any computer related store. But more likely it is a smaller pos one and you will have to hope the computer store keeps those in stock or you can also search for the hp-parts website, I don't remember the exact url for it but I'm sure if you google it, it will come up. Some of them are damn pricey though. good luck

I take the power supply apart and replace just the fan, but I had a bunch on old power supply's and before i tossed them I took the fans out.

so that when that piece of shit hp finally shits the bed (and it will) he can take that nice antec 420 watt powersupply and use it in a new computer he will build himself after learning what piece of shit mass produced computers are in this day and age.
