No, it was a cool idea but the company went in a different direction before it could fully develop the site.

crockett 12-26-2004 12:35 PM

I'm going to start moving into the mainstream area after the new year. I have an idea on how to make some money from the online gaming community (not gambling) that I want to try out.

I think those kinds of communities are greatly under served.

like myspace.com?

guitar tablature is usually constructed in text with lines and numbers, not very userfriendly.. well how about a service from which members can use a tablature system to write their own tabs which display on that flash guitar neck (it'd be dynamic obviously) :) It could definitely take over the current tab sites. Downside is it'd be a lottttt of work. Could also be transformed into an online guitar training service (bass and possibly drums as well) for a minimal fee.

Portal Sites

I am in the process of building 2 online portals.

1. Band.com
2. Production.com

The first will service the music industry and the second will service both the music and film industries.

Dave don't you own a music label? When I am further along I would love the chance to chat with you about some of my ideas for Band.com

Great domains. How are you planning on setting up Band.com? I had an idea awhile ago - although some of it has been done before, on your domain name it could really compete if it were done correctly. A service that allows bands to host their own personal page and showcase their mp3's (been done before) - each band member can have their own login/bio page/skill page.. A "find a musician" feature for bands looking for likeminded musicians.. Contests, Rating systems, Internet radio, etc...

Harmon 12-26-2004 12:51 PM

Thanks for the compliment on the domains and the tips. It is always nice to hear ideas and thoughts from other people.

The direction we are heading in will make Band.com a destination portal but with music as the driving niche. In other words we want to become peoples start page just like a yahoo.com, Msn.com etc. Our goal is to provide all the services these portals have but they will be aimed at a person who lives and breathes music.

Content is king here and will be the make or break factor in our survival. as you said most of the ideas have and are being done somewhere else. The one thing I don't see is a one stop shop where all the ideas are seamlessly put together.

We are putting together all the pieces in the form of a skeleton and I will post screen shots for suggestions on the design direction we are headed in. Iknow how much everyone likes to add their :2 cents: (not directed at you however)

Band.com will be the first project in line and after things get rolling we will be moving on to production.com

Our aim with Production.com is to be a resource site for film makers and music producers....more details to follow :)

If anyone has an input please send me you thoughts, comments, and suggestions. I would love to hear them. In early 2005 we are moving our base of operations back to NYC where I have spent most of my young adult life. We hope to have our offices in Dumbo. If anyone is looking for a job or knows someone that could have them send me an e-mail.

50k isn't enough to set up a gambling site. 500k minimum.

Pornwolf 12-26-2004 03:15 PM

Hi Shuki, I am deep in the music biz as well (over 15 years with hits to match). You might want to kick your idea around on www.velvetrope.com . That's really the only real industry forum on the web. Plenty of band members and music execs on there that will give you a better sounding board about your ideas than anywhere else.

QuaWee 12-26-2004 03:32 PM

anime website, so I can stop lying to my parents about what I do :sadcrying

Pornwolf,

Thanks for the link. We actually spoke a long time ago via e-mail. This was when I was still in NYC so it was at least 2-3 years ago. How are things going? Hope you are having a good holiday.

You're not lying, you're just not telling the truth right now for a good reason. That's not that bad.

wyldblyss 12-26-2004 04:39 PM

I already do mainstream...pet stuff and do well. I have another idea we are currently developing that I think will do very very well.
My advice...when an idea you have keeps popping back into your head..do it.

That is great advice. My problem is I'll think of something and say, damn, tha is a great idea, I will start tomorrow. Then I forget about it.

You have a point. I keep thinking about fucking Scarlett Johannson.

Semi-Retired-Dave 12-27-2004 12:47 AM

Why don't you stop thinking and work your way to your fantasy.

Odin88 12-27-2004 01:21 AM

I usually think about traffic first, than build a site around whatever I can get for free ;) Of course, if a really awesome idea struck me I'd give it a go, but I don't feel like wasting time on something that will earn me a dollar a day (been there done that). Traffic generation or profitability (if you're buying the traffic) is always the key as far as I see it. Everything else falls into place from there.
