I kind of agree with that, this is kind of like the lacey peterson trial of GFY. shit like this happens everyday, but for some reason (obvious to some, not so apparent to others) this time it blew up.

But what i dont understand, is if I'm having a beer with a guy I hardly know and he shows me a picture of his wife or something, and I make some joke about fucking her and he's deeply offended. First of all, I like Scott - I enjoy bullshitting with him at shows and some of his posts/threads are quite amusing.

i kinda agree to this - if marty's wife is handicaped, or if marty is impotent or something along those lines I will phone Marty myself and personally apologise as I don't ever recall ever meeting him or his wife and i assumed they were both physically and mentally healthy.

It's of course generally smart to not let people on GFY get under your skin as it wastes your time and energy.

For the same reason, it's a pretty safe bet to randomly insult people on a bulletin board if that is entertaining for you.

The above is true if we assume that only 10% of GFY are Webmasters and only 10% of those Webmasters actually go to conferences.

Add to that the fact that most people don't attend every party and walk the show floor all day every day. This makes it very unlikely of you and the person you insulted ever meeting face to face.

However behind every "faceless" insulter and victim are real people. Insult the family of someone who attends shows regularly and you have crossed the line and greatly increase your chances of an ass whooping.

The bigger picture is the "no man is an island" deal no matter how successful you may think you are. Your peers in the industry are watching how you treat people and how you react to other people and this determines how they will associate with you business-wise, given a choice.

If you use the "board persona" "I was only fucking around" as an excuse to do anything you want without thinking then be prepared to deal with it when you go too far.
