Hijabs (Muslim head clothes) forbidden

Starting 1.1.05, wearing Hijabs will be forbidden in public schools and most jobs in Switzerland.

I think this is a critical step for a country which is known as one of the most liberal countries world wide. On the other hand, when working lets say in a supermarket or McDonalds or so ... the Hijab is just not a part of the uniform, everyone has to wear. To make this up, Christian Crosses are banned from school rooms as well.

good idea? step in the wrong direction? Would you want this law for your country, too? Discuss!

i think it sucks, IMO everyone should have religious freedom. no government should dictate what a particular religion can or cannot wear. there will be a lot of muslim women that will have to give up thier jobs because of that, and i really think that really sucks

That are those things that cover the eyes as well right?

if so I 100% agree with that law, to work with someone you must be able to look someone in the face and not at some dress

i agree with that. Muslims are still allowed to wear those kinds of religious clothes private and public all time, but not in public schools and in some jobs.

Just ask yourself the question: If you have a company and a sales team who visits the customers ... would you want a woman wearing a Hijab while they visit the customers?

regarding public schools ... its forbidden to wear any kind of hats in the class room ... but muslim kids were allowed to wear a Hijab because of religious reasons.

Very sensible thing to do... Religion is something to practise at home. Not in public.

And the nijab covers the complete face as well. That has an impact on public safety.

no the hijab covers cover the hair, shoulder, and chest area, it's not much different then the habits Catholic Nuns wear.

niqab is the full covering, the veil that covers the face but leaves the eyes visable. seems to me as long as you can look them in the eyes doesn't really matter if you can't see the rest of their face. if these women want to dress modestly because they believe it pleases their God and thier husbands what is so wrong with that?

Hesitantly i would call it a good idea. Only on the principle of removing religion from public schools. But i sincerely hope that is all the further it goes.

Bullshit. For those who practice religion, it dictates their moral position. A key factor of morality is that if one can just "switch it off" whenever that's convenient, it's not one's moral position but merely chosen behavior.

now that's just stupid, a person who practices any form of religion isn't going to stop just because they leave their home, it's a way of life for them, not something they can just turn off and on

Thats absolutely retarded. Half of you people dont even know what a hijab is, the other half dont know why the muslim women wear it. I thought liberals were suppose to preach understanding, not ignorance? Why not take the same effort to go out and explain to people that just because a woman is wearing a scarf over her head, it doesnt mean shes a doormat. Why not explain to people that just because someone beleives in a different imaginary man then you, it doesnt mean they're not human. I do agree that religion should be removed from public schools, so no prayers, no classes about religion, but telling someone they cant go to this school because they wear a scarf on their head is retarded.

here in Switzerland, people can fight each and every law (direct democracy). You just have to collect 50'000 signatures and the law comes to a public vote.
Im a bit surprised that noone wanted to fight this law ... maybe people are just scared of muslims these days

Well here in Canada, the police have made new hats for muslim officers, they are essentialy the turbon with a police badge on the front.
Also the TTC drivers (Toronto Transit) were banned on asking people to remove nasibs so they couls see the persons face. The reason to see the face is when people buy a metro pass, you have to have an ID to go along with it to prove it is you. This is to stop people from sharing it.
I do not agree with giving people an optin on a uniform, if you want to join the police, you have to wear theit uniform not a modified one.
Also if i have to carry ID to prove i bought a metro pass when i was in College, and one day i didnt bring it, and the driver was going to kick me off the bus, however a person wearing a nihab just has to show their eyes. As far as i am concerned this is DISCRIMINATION.

Public school is different than private school. Public school is to allow everyone the equal opportunity to education. There are partially public funded private schools, such as Catholic, where they of course are allowed to display and wear crosses.

It's not saying it's bad or wrong, it's saying that if you want to go to fully government funded schools, to prevent harassment or differences between students, that they must come as they are, without religious attachments. THIS DOESN'T MEAN THEY WON'T TEACH / TALK ABOUT ALL DIFFERENT RELIGIONS, that would be stupid and create ignorance.

People are willing to give up certain freedoms in the name of national security? Why not do the same for the idea of secularism?

USA has chosen not to go down that route. I think it's mainly because the religious exteremists here are less of a threat than they are in the rest of the world? Maybe seperation of church and the state isn't such a critical issue here? You need to understand that different countries need different laws.

As they say.... When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Does a piece of clothing make people more religious or something? Seems like those who alter their appearance (or anything else out of the norm) because of their religion are trying very hard to be separatists.

It does not say in the Quran that women must wear it. All it says is that women must dress modestly.

Women were forced to wear it only after 200 years after the death of Muhammed (their prophet). They copied it from Christians at the time.

It's all got to do with interpretation. That's why 98% of Muslims today are not really Muslims since they take the Quran's text out of context. Pieces of shit if you ask me
