How many of you ever heard of or even read something by Jakob Nielsen and his AlertBox?

Shame on you if you haven't. Brilliant, yet controversial usability expert. Although most of his stuff seems intuitive, it's ridiculous to see just how many designs do not match any of his guidelines.

I first read about him about 4 years ago when usability started to just take off.

Very controversial, and IMO, his ideas are too restrictive on design.

The Normal Nielsen group has done some funded research on usability especially in the world of the web. A good designer should definitely take a peak on what he has to say. Usability is something that surely gets overlooked in UI design very often, and leaves potential customers confused instead of making clear what you have to offer and how to get it.

You have to love the commercial sites that think they have a brilliant splash page but then there's no clear and obvious way for the surfer to go beyond that page.

It sometimes makes you wonder if they really do want to do business with their surfers
