This is so true. The generals and other officers do alright though. My father stayed in the Army reserves after he got out of the Korean War and rose to the rank of Colonel. We used to go to the Officer Clubs on bases and though they weren't country clubs by any means, they had everything like them, tennis courts, golf courses, high end dining, and everyone saluting you all the time.

Just in case some people were wondering, alot of miltary families dont keep their marriages together. In the Marine Corp we have one of he highest divorce rates in the country. Right next to cops and certain types of doctors. We have a bad habit of getting married and concieving right before deployment.

I heard someone say once that you can tell how many times a Marine has been deployed by how many kids he has. LOL

One of the toughests jobs in the service is being a marine wife. It takes a very special girl to marry a marine, and when she does, god help her, she is going to need all the help she can get.

Spousal abuse is treated seriously by the military. They receive counseling...both parties. If the abuse continues they are punished...and are often given a General Discharge under less than honorable conditions. They may not be punished in like fashion as civilians...but they are punished. Spousal abuse can cost one his career.

The reasons for a higher percentage of spousal abuse among military personel are multiple. Soldiers unknowingly marry a slut...but they also sometimes knowingly marry a slut...thinking that there love for them will keep them faithful. They find them in the many bars and strip clubs that permeate service towns.

Husbands are away from home as often if not more so than they are at home. Young wives...become bored...and go out to play. When the husbands return and learn about their wives activities they retaliate with anger/verbal/physical abuse.

It is really a quite a spectacle to see a unit deploy and then see the wives hit the E-Clubs and or downtown bars. One can always judge when a unit is deployed by the increase of women in the E-Clubs and bars.

WTF? And there's always screaming little kids in the background.

How these guys keep their wives content while they are away in some fleabag hell hole for 2 years is beyond me.

What am I missing here. How do these guys find women this dedicated to just sit at home waiting for them for several years or do most of these deals fall apart?

As crazy as this sounds.....some people actually do fall in Love and want to spend the rest of their lives together

True Story from my world....

One of my very best friends deployed to Iraq one year ago. He feels serving in the Military is the role he was meant to play in life. At home he has a three kids a great career and a wife who has a booming business as a hair stylist. In his time away they have had the third child and the deployment according to them has strengthened the bond between them beyond anything they could have imagined...

I too wonder how so many of the women are able to keep it together and it makes think of how important the women back home played a role in our nation during WWII...

I applaud the ladies who are standing watch over the households while the man in their life serves...

I cannot speak for said report, but as a former Platoon Sgt. I can tell you that in 8 years of active service I had not heard of one instance of spousal abuse being swept under the carpet....I watched many Marines go to the brig and lose rank for spousal abuse.

It was alyways treated very seriously and in my experiences Marines were given no quarter when charged.

I too was a PLT SGT and I concur...it is a career buster.

Thats true, I've never seen slack given when a Marine did something stupid like that.
