They never stated or alluded to what state they live.
Additionally if you watch the episodes - So many things conflict with one another (geographically), that technically, they don't live in any one particular state. ![]() |

I dont recall the answer, but they actually gave away the state in which the Simpsons are located in.
In one Episode, the creator of Danger Dog was at the school answering questions, and everyone's hand was up, the first person asked which state Danger Dog was from and when the creator answered the question like everyone's hand went down. The state Danger Dog is from is the actual state of the Simpsons. Thank you ![]() |

There was a Simpson episode where they were giving their story and they said they were from Kentucky. The clues always leads to Missouri though....

Where Is The Simpsons' Springfield?
Version 3.0 Originally by Raymond Chen & Dave Hall Contributions from Andrew A. Gill Maintained by Sam Hughes Where is The Simpsons' Springfield? Ronaldo: I tried to write, but I didn't know what state you lived in. Lisa: It's a bit of a mystery, yes, but if you look at the clues, you can figure it out. ~ "Blame It On Lisa" [ THE SHORT ANSWER ] Springfield does not exist. Its location is a running gag, no more. There is enough evidence in the existing 335+ episodes of The Simpsons to preclude Springfield's placement in ANY American state. There are so many geographical contradictions between episodes that it is impossible for Springfield to actually exist. This has now become a running gag among both the writers of the show and its fans. In the show, references to Springfield's precise location are always artfully hidden, usually for comic effect: This scene, from a preliminary script to "Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes" demonstrates the proper attitude to have towards the issue. Scene: A train station. Herbert Powell is at the ticket booth. Herb: I want a ticket to Springfield. Ticket Agent: Springfield, Illinois? Herb: No. Ticket Agent: Springfield, Massachusetts? Herb: No, Springfield... As Herb says the name of the state, a train whistle blows, preventing us from hearing the answer. Springfield is "Anytown, USA". It's as if all of America was compressed into a single town, or a single state. Springfield is everywhere and nowhere. That's not gonna stop us looking.

Direct evidence:
Only direct evidence is permitted here. Calling upon weather conditions, accents, local geography etc. doesn't count. Many of these references appear here on the principle that you don't give the state after the city if it's the state you're currently in. There are many towns with the same name as American states; for example, there is a Delaware in Arkansas, an Arkansas in Kentucky and a Kentucky in Illinois. Many more references (marked with an *asterisk) assume that it is a state which is being referred to, not some town in another state. Alabama -- A store in Springfield Mall has things from this state. [7F22] -- One of the frat brothers comes from the Alabama chapter. [8F10] -- Another state which had its own essay competition. [8F01] Alaska -- Krusty's guest brings an Alaskan timberwolf on his show. [9F05] -- The family's free trip to any state didn't include Alaska. [2F08] California -- Homer and Joey want to go there.* [2F10] Florida -- The Top Hat Channel is not available in Florida or Utah. [7F13] -- The Winfields move there. [9F06] -- Abe sent the family a postcard from this state.* [2F06] Hawaii -- Not within driving distance of Michigan. [7F16] -- Horst informs SNPP drunks they'll spend six weeks at their drying-out facility in Hawaii. [8F09] -- Homer wants to take the whole family there. [9F17] -- The family's free trip to any state didn't include Hawaii. [2F08] Illinois -- David Tamkin notes that Springfield is not the state capital [7F01] -- David Tamkin also notes that the driver's license agency of Illinois is not called 'DMV' [7F15] -- It's "nowhere near" Chicago. [3F20] Iowa -- Bart & Lisa's aptitude tests were graded in this state. [8F15] Louisiana -- Mt. Splashmore services the tri-county area. [7F18] Chief Wiggum located a hole-digger in Shreveport [8F11] Maryland -- Milhouse has a Krusty trading card showing Krusty visiting relatives in Annapolis, Maryland. [1F04] Massachusetts -- [3F08]: "Go back to Massachusetts, pinko!" Michigan -- in [7F16], they drive home, passing a sign that says, "You are leaving Michigan". -- The Box factory boxes are not assembled in Springfield, but in Flint, Michigan. [1F11] Minnesota -- Another state which had its own essay competition. [8F01] Mississippi - Krusty started out as a street mime in Tupelo. [7G12] -- Boy sales are only legal in Springfield and Mississippi. [3G03] Missouri -- Marge mentions the bowling museum in "Saint Looee, Missouri" [7F15] {David Tamkin} -- Abe mentions this state, [2F06] New Jersey -- Leon says "I'm a bricklayer from Paterson, New Jersey." [7F24] New York -- Another state which had its own essay competition. [8F01] Ohio -- There are no Kwik-E-Marts in Ohio. [1F10] Texas -- Bea says, "I'm haunting a family in Texas" [7F17] -- Slant drilling is illegal in Texas [2F16] {Brian Phillips} -- "No jury in the world's going to convict a baby. Mmm...maybe Texas."* [2F20] Utah -- The Top Hat Channel is not available in Florida or Utah. [7F13] -- Bart races Milhouse to Utah.* [2F11] Washington D.C. -- An executive at the Malibu Stacey factory calls in a favour from Washington. [1F12] -- Springfield is represented by a Senator. [2F11] West Virginia -- Lisa wails for the West Virginia coal-miner. [7G06] Wisconsin -- Nelson remarks that a field looks "Awful! It looks like Wisconsin!" [EABF16] ******** Østergaard} Episode 8F01, "Mr. Lisa Goes To Washington", contains what was noted by Andreas Hagen to be the first piece of direct evidence point TOWARDS Springfield's placement in a state rather than AGAINST (as with all the evidence above). In this episode, Springfield's congressman, Bob Arnold, is approached by two different shady corporate types and offered bribes - firstly to cut down Springfield's National Forest, and secondly, later in the episode, to drill for oil on Mount Rushmore (specifically, Teddy Roosevelt's head). Mount Rushmore, SOUTH DAKOTA. This places Springfield firmly in South Dakota. Or does it? SNPP's episode capsule for this episode contains more discussion on the subject...

Most of you are too young to remember but in "Father knows best" The Anderson family lived in Springfield too, but the State to my knowledge was never mentioned. I think they used the name Springfield like you'd use anytown, USA because there are so many Springfields in the US
