hip hop is the same shit as rock and roll, disco, etc they're a culture to some people and they're a type of music to others. To YOU it might not be a culture, but say that to the people who eat, shit and sleep hip hop.

Nap, very well said except the affirmative action part. Just happened to a friend of mine that was applying for a manager postion. Rumors were going around that they wanted a 'black female' though my friend kept on saying he was more qualified. They never gave him an interview.

The union got involved just a little saying that he never applied according to HR. Funny thing is that he submited his cover letter, resume and all supporting documents overnight just to get comfirmation.

Not to knock down the women who got the position and 20k increase in pay but to overlook another applicant with more experience, higher degree level and glowing reviews in the work place... Sorry to say it still happens even in 2004. :)

I disagree, poverty and lack of education can be a factor that leads to an increased crime rate and more likelyhood of joining a gang but that doesn't mean "hip hop" is harmless. When you have teens who only hears shit about doing drive bys and fucking bitches 24/7 are you really expecting that to not have any influence on them?

Racism = A feeling of racial, cultural or ethnic superiority over others.

Prejudice= Certain beliefs and attributes that you associate with people of other cultures, races or ethnicites.

Just because you are prejudiced against someone of another race does not mean you are automatically a racist!

IT is NOT the government's role to educate children, it is their role to provide a structure and institutions where learning can take place that can give them a sense of the world and what it has to offer. The job of teaching morals and values is up to the parents. Don't blame the government just because some parent's can't do a good job.

I had promised to leave this thread alone; not, on the contrary, to prevent my panties getting bunched (when in fact I wear boxers), but because I feel expressing my opinion here is an act in futility. When I see that I have been grossly misunderstood, however, I must break my promise and clarify myself.

I do not believe the government has the right to brainwash citizens via education or any means. You mistook my use of the word educate for connoting brainwashing. I do believe it is the responsibility of goverment to provide adequate educational facilities, wherein citizens are able to rise above their base instincts, and become a more socially enlightened people.

I still insist that rap or hip hop form a harmless sub-culture. There are many people who would have you believe that movies and music influence people in a negative way. This promotes censorship in a way that can cripple these artistic mediums. If you believe nothing I say, I truly hope someone will remember that watching a movie, or listening to Eminem will not turn you into a modern day Norman Bates. Poverty and lack of adequate education have, throughout history, proven to cause near as much social unrest as the battle between religius faiths. It might be argued that music and movies can actually educate people in a positive way.

This leads me to my last point. Our definition of racism. Maybe I define racism wrongly. My phd is in economics and not social studies (although it is a social science). Racism, to me, is the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other races. I feel strongly about this subject because I've had friends killed in the name of racism.

So, I'm not a facist, I'm just someone who thinks racism - in all its many forms - is a bad thing. I'm also not a bible-basher. Believe me, I'm not the world's nicest guy. Among other things, I loan money and erect/rent out buildings -- these activities do not allow me to be entirely pleasant. I also don't like to condescend, but there is no nice way to tell someone you believe them to be wrong.

Let me leave you with something. Babies come into the world as innocent lambs. They know nothing of racism and it's consequences. It is society that teaches racism. Ask yourself, would the world be a better place if our babies were never taught racism? There is nothing wrong with a white guy calling a black guy names, if that is okay with both parties. The problems arise when name-calling is done through hate. Words have a habit of turning to violence.

My point, throughout this, has been remove the hate. It wont happen, I just believe it's what people should strive to achieve.
