I'm about to hire my first employee. Any advice?

He's a friend of a friend, I talked to him tonight and he said he'd be interested in some part time work he can do from home and I want some part time help.

Im just going to have him do freesites and galleries for me.
I have no idea what Im going to pay him. I guessing around $10/hr or so is decent since the work is so easy. And just have him work like 2-3 hours a day.

Any of you ever hire a non industry person to help you out?
Any advice for mistakes to avoid?

you should teach him very well how to make those galleries/freesites because it's pretty hard for non industry people to make a good one right away

Good luck to you. I don't think I would ever hire my friends.

You know...that old 'keep business and friendship separate' thing.

If you do, though..make sure you write it down...clear and concise...

yeah he's got 2 machines at home so he knows his way around the net. Ill show him everything though. this is what I liek because I can train him to do it the way I want to.

I just dont want him to figure out how to do it himself and want to do it on his own and not for me anymore.
I hope not, that would suck.

2-3 hours a day to build AND submit free sites AND galleries? Damn, send him my way I'll give him $15/hour lol...

Anyways if it were me I would have content ready templates made to go and just get him to do some basic touch ups and submit. You don't want him to get too good

Yeah, I have to agree, he should be really dumb if after a couple of days of work he wont realize that he can do freesites and galleries for himself and have all the money...

I personally would outsource if I wanted someone to do grunt-work.. they dont get any funny idea's and work for peanuts, they also know what they're doing.

I agree. At first I think all im going to have him do is submit.
I have about 300 galleries of my own, I'll just have him resubmit those for a month or 2 and hopefully he'll get better and it will be easy for him to just put an index page on them and turn them into freesites and submit those too. I wont have him build anything.

Anyways the guy is a waiter probably busting his ass to make $60 a night, so an extra $30 a day to sit on his ass hitting "submit" hopefully will be good for him.

Prospective employees should be shot on sight. No mercy should be shown

It will save you a heap of problems in the future..

Of course you won't believe a word I say but give it a couple of months and you will wish you had done what I suggested.
