:tongue Voyeurism in the Home

"A city man is accused of being a voyeur within his own house... The initial charges are a result of Pennuto allegedly having video surveillance equipment set up in his house... The indications are that Pennuto bought the equipment a few years ago... At this point in the investigation, it was determined no one outside the house had been affected, the sergeant said. The victim, a minor under the age of 16, lives in the house... The equipment was 'set up in an area that created a risk ? a private area where the child could be viewed,' the sergeant said." ? The Middletown Press (US)

"It's my house and you'll do what I say... So long as you're living under my roof, you'll abide by my rules." How many of you heard your father issue these kinds of pronouncements when you were a teenager? It used to be that a man's home was his castle, that he was the lord and master of his own private domain. A lot of people still feel this way. Ask any farmer who has shot an animal out of season because it was messing up his tomatoes. "The animal's on my property," the reasoning goes, "therefore he belongs to me. I can butcher him same as a cow if I want to."

Really it's a pretty deep-rooted principle that the owner of a property establishes its laws. Usually it's not questioned much except in relatively mundane circumstances, as when a guy wants to put up a garage but zoning laws forbid it. It's quite a twist, therefore, when it's not a matter of violating a zoning code but rather a person, underage at that. Does the right of privacy that comes with owning property extend to the point where you can violate the privacy of anyone who resides on your property?

Evidently the answer is no, and yet what's the line between watching over your kids and peeping on them? Parents often do invasive things ? say, reading a child's diary ? with the legitimate intent of keeping an eye on their kids. And yet it would be stepping over the line to read your child's diary so you could masturbate to it. "It's my house and you'll do what I say" is a valid argument when you're telling your kid to turn down his music, but not when you're telling him to parade naked in front of a camera.
