LOL All you naysayers and "this isn't MY CITY" people are missing the point. If it's accurate only 70% of the time and doubles or triples click-thru rates and revenue- wtf? GeoMarketing can NEVER be 100% accurate ALL THE TIME. There are a number of variables at play. The geo solution provider where you get your "database" from, who owns the IPs in what city (which ISP), whether or not you're surfing on proxies or AOL, etc. We're looking at 70% - 80% accuracy with what we're providing presently. That's HUGE when you takeinto consideration the following: The fact of the matter is simply that surfers are somehow drawn to click when they see their city or something in their closely surrounding area ... THAT'S IT! More clicks translates into more sales ... WAKE UP!

This is akin to the popup rationale which suggests that unless a surfer signs up, their experience of your site is irrelevent. Some of us don't necessarily just funnel our surfers through corrals until they sign up or get lost. There is no question that acurrate recognition of a surfer's location and geo-sensitive content can be very effective. But, some sites actually host to communities of surfers who recognize quality of experience and when a site says 'look how sharp our technology is' 70% of the time and 'look at how stupid we are' 30% of the time, that ratio might not be worth the negative impact. For a 'tag em and bag site' even 50/50 is ok, but I'd like to see at least 90% accuracy before I start tell the other 10% of my market that my technology sucks. As I understand, there are accurate databases available but they cost real money. This may not even be an issue about using geo-ip, it may be an issue about using the free databases for geo-ip. -Dino BTW: geo-ip gives me the wrong city, wrong state, and wrong country

Again, GeoMarketing can NEVER be 100% accurate ALL THE TIME. There are a number of variables at play. The geo solution provider where you get your "database" from, who owns the IPs in what city (which ISP), whether or not you're surfing on proxies or AOL, etc. BTW - It is my understanding that AOL has cut deals with a number of ISP's to offer service - so not all IP's are in Virginia. (Although I could be wrong) Also, under the condition that (for whatever reason) our system can not read the IP at all or the're no relevent data for a particular IP - then it will literally default to the words "YOUR TOWN" or "YOUR CITY" ... this way at least the ad makes sense For example: "Meet hot chicks in YOUR TOWN!"

I respect yours wholeheartedly. Just to address one point though, no database is 90% accurate or better JUST DUE to the fact that there are X% of surfers on proxies, AOL, and because ISP's that own IP's aren't in the same cities as their customer's/subscribers ... that's the long and short of it. Secondly, when I have client's that post real world results that say: Quote:
We helped SEXSEARCH.COM and their participating webmasters increase revenues by approximately 4 times!!! I don't need to convince you what's right or wrong. I know this works and that BUSINESS is a numbers game! Honestly, I'm not in the "community site" business ... but I AM a sales and marketing pro! Best of luck in all you do, bro!

Geo-IP give results for most IPs - wrong results in many cases. How would you know if you have a good result or a bad result? If YOU can tell that a geo-ip result is wrong, why can't it? BTW: I've been using geo-ip for a very long time because it does have its uses, but I only resolve to Country and Canada/USA are combined into one so the problems with north american proxy (aol) users don't impact my success. I'm sure in time better databases will be available. It's a great idea, but it's not really new and I'm not sure why there is so much hype about it now all of a sudden. -Dino

				 | This thread gets my vote for the thread having the most people that don't read before they post. Props to J$tyle$ for your patience Unless you REALLY think that you have a high percentage of return visitors that will never come back if you get their town wrong, give it a shot for a week and see rather than basing it on whether it got YOU correct. |
