Anyone here ever own or use the new Canon XL2?

I'm currently shooting content with the XL1, which works great. But I am the kind of guy who has to always have the latest and greatest...

So if you're using the XL2, what do you think? Worth the extra money? What fps do you use to shoot at? How do you like the cinegamma featuers? All that good shit. anything to help is great. thanks!

I have used the Cannon cams for several jobs but never actually owned one. One reason to use an XL1/2 is that you tend to get a better reaction from the talent because it looks like a pro camera. I would never buy it for this reason but I am sure it is a big reason for many people even if they don't admit it.

Unless you need a long zoom or in camera 16:9 I would get the DVX100A. You save $1,500 and it is not so large so you can get away with using it in public areas whereas you will attract too much attention with the XL.

if i were i'll hold off bit before gettin one. i am sittin in the cut waiting for a revision of the XL2 like they did with the XL1S.
The minute you buy it, they are going to drop a new XL2S with all the revised and fixed quirks of the current XL2.

for now, as much as love the XL2, I am holding on to my Panasonic DVX100As until middle of 2005 to see what happens.
as a matter of fact, from what i hear, Sony is planning on releasing the Sony HDV cam with 24P support around April/May or some shit (but that's only if HD matters more to you than having interchangeable lenses)

I have seen that new Sony cam and not so excited anymore. With HDV the dropouts are 15 frames each so the picture freezes for half a second and you lose audio. Also, it does not have "real" 24P.

I've been told the xl2 doesn't handle low light conditions very well. The rep I was talking to said that the shadows that are sometimes created when you're trying to zoom in on inserts during intercourse would likely be too dark.

So I didn't buy it.

I assume you don't have that problem with the xl1?

XLs and DVX cams are not as good in low light as the Sony VX. And when you shoot progressive you need even more light. The new Sony HDV cam is not as good in low light as the VX.
