what should be in that file?

I have about 1850 enteries in there.

You should only have a single entry for localhost in there.

that depends on what is in there

if you installed kazaa resurrection it will replace your HOSTS file with one that comes with the app which contains IP's to their servers but more importantly (and super kool) is that it will put in about 1000 entries that route known spam/spyware url's to 127.0.0.1.

ever since I installed that I have yet to get one piece of spyware, it's top notch.
