    Arm & Hammered :

5500 Deserters: We Won't Go To Iraq

(CBS) The Pentagon says more than 5,500 servicemen have deserted since the war started in Iraq.

60 Minutes Wednesday found several of these deserters who left the Army or Marine Corps rather than go to Iraq. Like a generation of deserters before them, they fled to Canada.

What do these men, who have violated orders and oaths, have to say for themselves? They told Correspondent Scott Pelley that conscience, not cowardice, made them American deserters. "I was a warrior. You know? I always have been. I?ve always felt that way -- that if there are people who can?t defend themselves, it?s my responsibility to do that," says Pfc. Dan Felushko, 24.

It was Felushko's responsibility to ship out with the Marines to Kuwait in Jan. 2003 to prepare for the invasion of Iraq. Instead, he slipped out of Camp Pendleton, Calif., and deployed himself to Canada

Wow... This war is getting out of hand. Smart to stand up against fighting an unjust war but dumb for coming to Canada. If they don't have duel citizenship they will be deported back to the U.S.

there was another report last week that the government called up about 6,000 troops from the inactive reserves. Most of these guys are now 35-40 year olds with families and jobs and about 40lbs more than when they were in. about 1/3 of them refused to report and many of them are going to fight in court whether they should get called up or not.

What is left out of the article is a comparative number. Desertions happen every year...during war or peace. Off hand I do not know what the average annual desertion rate was prior to the conflict in Iraq.

While it is true that a soldier is not required to carry out an "unlawful" order...the "catch 22" is...it is military superiors that decide if the order given was lawful...or not...thus if one chooses not to obey what he deems to be an "unlawful" order one must be 100% certain that the order was in fact an "unlawful" order...or their will be consequences to pay.

The statement made by the one soldiers attorney is laughable..."And anyone who says soldiers should go to jail if they don't fight in an illegal war is persecuting them."

I saw Canadian lawyers discussing this case and they agreed that the deserters would not win their case...but because of the Canadian system they probably would not be swiftly returned to the United States.

Most of them would be in their twenties and it is not true that 1/3 of them refused to report...but it is true that a certain percentage of them cannot be located...and it is also true that some will fail to report...as well as some will be exempted for various reasons...and some may even choose to fight in court, if they cannot become exempt, but they will lose and be required to report for duty.

hmm, pathfinder is on my ignore list, but let me guess... his two posts were about how great the American military is and how this is somehow a non-issue. There's also some semantics about how this information doesn't really mean what it says, basically some bullshit about how this happens regularly, and there's a lot of "while this is true, it's also true that..."

                What do I win?
