I've seen a lot of squirrels (babies & injured) make it back to the wild, so not all stories end up in their death.

Animal Control are the worse people to call in any situation with injured / dying wildlife. They're pretty much paid to round up animals, Feed and water the animals and if need be, kill said animals once not claimed and scrape dead animals off the road.
