Just cought a baby Squirrel what do i do?

I was on the phone looking out my window and I saw a cat dart up a tree and come bolting down with a squirrel in his mouth.

I was like no way so I ran out the door and chased the cat till he dropped the squirrel then i noticed it was a baby.
He can barely walk I put him back under the tree to see if his mom would grab him but never did so now i have him in a box.

what do they eat?

should I call aspca or take him to the vet?

Fucking cats, see if there is a wildlife rescue group in your phone book or maybe call the town or some vets to ask if they know of one.

Call th state wildlife management in your area, they will refer you to a wildlife rehabilitator.

Squirells do NOT make good pets, I tried.

i do know of two people that have raise them as pets, they scratch very bad though, not really a good pet idea

If it was a black canadian squirrel, I'd have you send him to me.

I've always wanted one of those little darkies.

Gotta agree with Hammer on that one. The wild life people will even come out and pick him up, and yes, they will try to get him back to health.

That was very nice of you to do, but be careful they will bite. especially if they are hurt.

You need to check that the Cat's teeth did not cut it's skin, Cats have a lot of bacteria in their mouth, that often kills Birds, or anything else that gets cut by it's teeth.

My friend actually rescues squirrels and from what I remember they need to be warm, what he normally did was microwave a sock with rice in it for about a minute (make sure it's not to hot) wrap it in a towel and put it in his box. They are very demanding they need feeding almost once an hour, and I believe their pee needs manual extraction (by rubbing) so you might want to give a wildlife group a call ASAP.

Did you hit google for wildlife rescue in your area? my friend does this on his own time, and dollar -- and the animal shelter normally calls him to pick them up from them, I think almost all are run by indiviuals on their own time.

You must keep that baby warm! If it's cold, it will die.

Go to your local pet store and tell them you have a baby squirrel. They will give you a can of formula that will replace mother's milk. Do NOT feed him cow milk!!!!! It can kill him! They will also give you a syringe to use for feeding him. After that, it's just like a human baby: feed it every few hours, as much as he wants, (not more, though). If he lives through the night, then you've got a winner. See if you can release him into the wild when he's a bit bigger, (no longer on milk and learning to eat nuts and sweet fruit...if you're going to release him, make sure that you give him some nuts that are only partially cracked so he learns that he must get into the nut before he can eat it).

Flying squirrels make great pets, and domesticate easily, but the larger non-flying squirrels do NOT. See if you can get in touch with your local wildlife rehab. Good luck!

NOTE: Once he's warm and fed, he'll stop squeeking until he's hungry again.

First of all, don't let the humane society or SPCA take it. They don't rehabilitate wild animals; they will just put it to sleep.

Secondly, it's cruel to keep wild animals as pets, so do as some others have suggested and contact a wildlife rescue group. They have people on call that you can leave the baby with. They will care for it until morning and then bring it to the shelter. I've had to do that a couple of times with birds that my cat has caught. They are trained for purposes such as these, and when the baby is well enough, they will release it back into the wild.

If you tell me where you live I'll look for a place for you...

There are programs available out there of people that foster Squirrels until they are healthy I know someone that used to do this but she is in Florida. I am sure if you call your local animal control unit they can assist you in finding one.

Don't take it to the ASPCA. Try finding a local wildlife refuge or animal rescue. Where are you located exactly? Seattle?

My grandfather owned a land clearing company back when he was alive. He once took down a tree with a squirrel nest in it. One baby survived and he raised it by hand. I was only like 10 or so when he had it but I always thought he was a cool pet.

He used to let it run around the yard and it always came back, he also used to let it ride with him in his truck all over the place. However one day he shut the truck door and the squirrel got crushed and died.

He used to let it run around the yard and it always came back, he also used to let it ride with him in his truck all over the place. However one day he shut the truck door and the squirrel got crushed and died.
Nice story

I don' want to break anyone's heart, but the wildlife people and the SPCA usually let it die. At least that's what's happened everywhere I've lived. I've had the misfortune of finding baby squirrels a few times in my lfe, whenever I've called the next day to check up, my squirrel had died.

One time there was this little ferral kitten in Olympia, it was snow white but it's intestines were comming out it's backside. I tried for hours and I finally got it to come close to me but when I picked it up it started freaking out and I freaked out because I felt it's intestines and I didn't want to hurt it so I let it go. I called the animal shelter and was crying for them to come and help it and they said no dice. They even yelled at me for letting it go, so I yelled back at them. Some people are nice, but alot of people are just assholes.
