unremovable spyware
I disconnected my pc from the internet and RAN norton, spy sweeper, spyboy search and destroy, all virtus checkers
and removed everything. Now that im plugged back in I have elite toolbar and a ton of other shit again. Anyone ran into a problem this bad? I let an idiot friend of mine on my PC. I've never seen spyware like this before.

Do all that in "safe mode". Nothing is unremovable.
Also run Hijackthis. If you know anything about you pc, you can remove it manually. Also run regedit go to the os and run see if anything is suspicious. |

Thanks for the comprehensive list !
Truly usefull ...if everything else fails, do a manual regedit - in which you first browse through, and then do searches for all imagineable words, you think may be found in the piece of spyware youre searching for -> try looking at the source code of redirects etc for hints, search for tool, ad, pop, iet, etc etc (and of course, dont just remove it all - most of it is prolly legit)

try PestPatrol - it can sometimes find things the other spyware cleaners can't.
spysweeper/adaware/pestpatrol is a good combo.

I have to reiterate what Vitasoy said...
You have to run the scans in Safe Mode, otherwise the worst crap won't get deleted. Windows "locks" some of the spyware files just like it protects system-files in normal mode. Just before rebooting into Safe Mode, It's best if You update the scanners' definition-files... ("Live Update" etc.) And at the same time, shut down Windows' "System Restore" feature on ALL disks. Finally, newer spyware uses virus-techniques more & more and sometimes actually infect systemfiles like "explorer.exe" and for some reason scanners' miss this completely... if that's Your case, Your only safe bet is to do a system-file restore from the Windows Install-CD, either in Safe Mode or by booting from it. Or You could do an Over-Install from the CD and chose "No" at every prompt asking wether You'd like to keep newer files installed... The downside to this is that You'll lose system-updates like SP2 and smaller patches... the pros are getting rid of infected system-files as well ;) Make sure to have the installs for the patches/updates You want to have installed downloaded/burnt to CD prior to doing this so You don't have to connect to downlad these once You're done with the "over-install"... Or else, You might get infected with shit through the vulnerabilities that Windows will now again have... like Blaster etc. - Have patches against such "at home" and install them after what I've suggested BEFORE You let the machine online again!

The safe mode suggestion is probably going to do the trick. The spyware likely has a file running during Windows which prevents your spyware killer from removing that is set to check for the other components at startup and reinstalls any missing.
