Believe it or not, huffing has been around much longer than you think. In the 1800's, nitrious chloride, ether and chloroform were used as popular intoxicants. Ether was drank or sniffed and was a cheaper alternative to alcohol. That lasted for most of the 19th century and early 20th centery. In the 1940's, solvents such as gasoline became popular. It wasn't until the 1960's that solvent sniffing became a problem. People used paint thinner, lacquer thinner, nail polish remover, shoe polish, airplane glue, lighter fluid and aerosol products such as spray paints, non-stick cooking sprays, shoe shine compounds, deodorants and hair spray.

Usually the substane is placed on a cloth or in a paper bag and inhaled deeply. Gases are placed in balloons and inhaled. Poppers are usually nitrates that are contained in a small glass bottles or ampules. The vials are broken or "popped" and the contents sniffed. They are sold under various names such as RUSH, KICK, BELT and JOCK AROMA.

The effects of nitrates include a fullness in the head or a rush. A mild euphoria or a perception that time has slowed down. Some users mentioned an increase in sexual feelings.

huffing has been popular among that age group since I was that age, primarily because you can find stuff to huff in your mom's kitchen cabinets
