This is his FIRST official visit to Canada since he took office.
He has declined an invitation to speak before Canadian Parliament because, according to his media people, he does not want to get heckled.
There were last minute arrangements in his visit to, instead of spending much time in the official part of the country, scoot right over to the Atlantic provinces to thank the (friendly, non-heckling, safe) people their for billeting and accommodation of the stranded US passengers during the 9/11 crisis.
The media has actually been training to wear gas masks as they want to be prepared for any possible outbreaks and be able to to report their observations if tear gas or pepper spray are deployed (as reported on CBC Sunday Report).
Canadians have been encouraged by the media to be polite and demonstrate restraint out of respect for the beef and softwood lumber industries which have been decimated by US trade policies and hope to see some forward movment.
No one here expects to actually see dubya, but the buses have been pouring into Ottawa for several days bringing protesters from across the country.
I've got popcorn....

I agree that, rather than acknowledging the unselfish and genuinely neighbourly actions of Canadians during 9/11 as it happened (they routed all planes to Canada), dubya was loudest in proclaiming that the Canadian border is too lax and poses a threat to America (with undertones that we provided the environment for the terrorists of 9/11 to prepare and attack).
That was bass ackwards in terms of priorities according to many.
Just one small (but consistent) example of the disrespect many have perceived here.
We could understand dubya visiting Mexico first after he first took office, but not visiting his largest trading partner in his entire first term of office does not embody a sense of respect towards our country.
For a 'world leader', we have not seem much in the way of statemanship or diplomacy.
However, according to interviews I have seen with high government officials in the state of Texas, dubya is considered a Texacan true and true. Right from the rifle-rack in the pickup to the 'who cares about anyone other than Texas' mentality (this is how the state officials described the way of the Texan).
While this may be fine for an insular community (we have our rednecks too), but a person spawned from this pond has no business claiming ability to understand, lead and/or take on the role of responsible leadership on a wordwide scale.
... as is clearly evidenced by the decimation of the outstanding economic acheivements of the Clinton era and the endless ongoing global disasters with 'made in usa' written all over them.

Bear firmly in mind that Canada could always find another place to sell our stuff to. We're a heavy natural resource exporter, and there's always China, India, Korea we could sell to. We should start selling oil in Euros and see who starts complaining.
Are you sure you weren't talking to american tourists with Canadian flags on their gear? Most Canadians I've met are whiney and self-righteous.

None taken. It's a stereotype because it is, largely, quite true. As soon as we found out that flights were diverted to halifax and st. johns (etc) there was floods of phone calls offering places for people to stay, to cook meals, schools organized staple donation drives... there were lineups literally down the block to give blood. It was really something to be a part of, and the people we helped and their families were very gracious and grateful.Originally posted by dcortez

It makes sense for a person who seeks to avoid personal conflict at any cost to go to a place that's the least likely to offer it. The point I was making is that many in this part of the world were personally hurt at his non-reaction, and while atlantic canadians are friendly, we also don't forget easily. Just ask Boston, whom we send big ol' christmas tree as a thank you from us every year (for close to 7 decades now) for their help in cleaning up after the halifax harbour explosion.
We know who our friends are. We also know when some smarmy git tries to use us a photo op in a cynical attempt to appear more 'worldly'.~

Magical? Hardly. Talk to any 'nuck that's travelled outside of north america and you'll have at least 2 anecdotes of US tourists using canadian flags on their luggage and accoutrements. The main reason, I'm told, is that luggage with US flags on them get magically lost at various airports.Originally posted by - Jesus Christ -

I wasn't aware that discussions were a competition. Am I supposed to compete to win a statement that bush is not well loved in this part of the planet? He's not. It's a simple fact, period. Discuss as much as you like, try to 'win' as hard as you may, but the plain facts remain. Why are you so hateful about that point? Edit: Ah, actually he summarizes it for me himself, quite succintly:
In this vast network of self congratulatory, self absorbed webpages comes something different... one written by me. That might make it different, but am I really the one to judge that? There are approximately 6,259,962,175 human beings living on this planet and every single one of them believes they're different... special... creative... even intelligent. Most of them are wrong, and that may very well include me.
That about covers it.Last edited by rickholio; 11-29-2004, 11:12 AM.~

We get a semi-regular parade. I have a theory that it has something to do with how temps are reported during the weather segment. Canada's temps are in C, American in F... so maybe they're thinking that by crossing the border they're going from 70 degrees to 20 degrees. 20 degrees is sub-zero, isn't it?

Just a couple items of note:Originally posted by Platinum Rinaldo
Canada is not the US's largest trade allie... just so you know
We buy goods from Canada when we would save money purchasing them from elsewhere... Your lumber isn't cheaper you know...
why?
Because we want to support NAFTA and make it stronger.
1) The Canadian/US trade relationship numbers are massively inflated. How so, you ask? Because those numbers measure only the value of the items crossing the border, not the ADDED VALUE of those items as they're being processed. Take this example:
- Canadian nickel from sudbury travels south to be turned into steel
- Those steel ingots come north to be forged into gears
- Those gears go back south to be placed into a transmission assembly
- That transmission goes north and gets installed into a new car, which is sold to a dealer south of the border
Looking at the 'value of trade', you can see that each stage only adds bits of incremental value, but the trade numbers report the full value of all parts irrespective of those increments. As a result, raw trade numbers are substantially overstated from the REAL trade numbers, which is part of the reason why I'm not quite as impressed as some when people mention it.
2) Apparently canadian lumber is cheaper... or at least, cheaper enough to be the source of constant NAFTA and WTO challenges by US logging firm lobbyists. Those challenges end up hurting other sectors (like house construction) and even the lumber industry (by causing issues with multinational logging corps that operate on both sides of the border e.g. Weyerhauser). I've still not decided whether they're launching all these challenges as a cynical ploy to gouge money from both us and the construction industry, or if they still genuinely consider canadian lumber subsidized even after 3 WTO ruling against them.~

i can't believe the star posted that.
But, apparently, he has dimplomatic immunity when he is on official business, and I think there are a few more reasons why this will not happen (softwood lumber and beef industries want to suck up after having been trampled by unfair trading practices and we don't want to jeopardize any chance of missing out on having a bunch of missles floating over our heads keeping us safe at night).
