go to www.norton.com , click on the nimda link, and read about how it works. If you have the IE 5.5 SP2 patch, then the flaw it exploits is gone - I believe.

If internet become unuseable in the future will be because of SPAM. I just don't open attachments and look the email properties before opening it if I have any doubts (looking for a VBS or other "virus" code). And webmasters need more caution with his sites, since some are infecting HTML/ASP and other files.

But spam really sucks. I'm not talking about the email you use for TGP/site postings, there you'll get the everyday junk mail (some people can talk about counting "uniques per day" or "K's per month"... hehehe), but about your personal or business email accounts.
Filters sucks. I think the servers must have filters, not us. Because with lots of spam with HTML and gifs if you don't check the email daily your mail box can be full.

Do you remember the media, "business plan guys" and venture capital people talking about millions (or billions) their companies would worth in 2001 ?

You are somewhat incorrect. Let me explain:

Back in the day viruses must be run by a human on your computer to be activated, as you are aware. This is no longer the case. How? Because computers can run programs without asking you. They always could, but most software never did this. Until now. I suggest you read up on the latest Nimda virus, from the link I posted above. If you do not have the latest sp2 patch for IE 5.5, then if you visit a webpage, or just preview an email in outlook, then Nimda can install itself. It can self install. It can self-activate. It is a virus. Therefore, viruses can self-activate. Why? Because of the scripting functionality in today?s computers allow programs to be run without consulting the user. It?s that simple.

I have a worm sitting on my computer right now. I stopped the Nimda worm/virus myself. I stopped it where it is activated each time the computer reboots. The program remains on my computer, just as your viruses do, but since they are not being run, I am in no fear of being infected. It?s sitting right there? harmless.

I have just proven that a worm doesn?t need ?only a network connection?. It?s a program. And like a virus, it needs to be run.

Worms are just as harmless as viruses. They are the same thing. Just small differences in what they do. The words virus and worm describe the most common features of the type of program they describe, but it doesn?t stop someone from making Nimda which has all features from both ?worm? and ?virus?. It is not black and white as you say. Both of their main intent is to spread. Damage is always secondary. You cannot damage what you have not spread to. Nimda is both a virus and worm. It has properties of both. There is no major difference.

If you think that Nimda is not both, then choose one. Either it is a worm, and I have a worm on my computer that is not living and breathing on it?s own with my net connection. Or, I have a virus that has self-activated. One of these is correct, yet you have claimed them both to be impossible.

I have just as much confidence in virus/worms as you do, but I do not have the same confidence in using IE and outlook programmed with all this extra programming functionality. It?s all very simple, if the program isn?t running, it?s harmless. I have format.exe on my computer, and as powerful as it is, it?s harmless until someone or some program runs it.

Just curious, because if you're running a mailserver as well, MDaemon is awesome.... you can block, route, re-route, trim, strip, filter and/or warn of virtually anything. Excellent prog.

I would never even consider to use MS for a server. But, I do prefer Windows over linux for my personal PC.

not running DNS, but i have a mailserver and FTP and a webserver. i have my own dedicated server.

where does MDaemon come from? would i already have it perhaps??

right now i'm block >184k emails because of the sircam virus. but anyone who sends me an email >184k that is not a virus is being blocked too. (actually it's being downloaded to my server, and then outlook deletes it off the server without downloading it to my PC). would be nice if i could auto-reply to all those emails, so that i don't block important ones without contact.

MDaemon is mail server software.... but it's expensive. www.mdaemon.com It's the best I've found... I use it here and love it.
