Who here has an iBook?

I am seriously considering getting one of those pups. After learning a lot about the GUI and its advantages over the Windows GUI, I think I am ready to do the switch.

Who here has one? I don't need the whole power of the G4 Powerbook, so don't try to upsell me

12/15/17 inches?

I am a little worried about the 1024x768 res on the 14 inch powerbook. I am used to more.

Then again I heard that the battery life is higher than usual

Oh yeah? Share some love here, how's the battery life, does it suffice for the daily HTML editing, emailing and music?

I am really eyeballing that one, because to me, I am more looking for portability than for performance. And with a RAM and HDD upgrade (512MB/60GB) it should be good to go.

Definetly go for the RAM and HDD upgrade.

The battery life is excellent, Espiecally if you keep the brightness on the screen down normally (the setting its normally on hurts my eyes it's so bright any way)

I cant recommend it any more, Go buy one

I have a 12" iBook, and it kicks ass. It's way faster than my "desktop replacement" notebook, weighs almost nothing, has a great battery life, is really sturdy and is pretty much everything I want in a notebook.

One minor note: don't buy your extra RAM from Apple. Just buy some 200-pins PC2700 (that's 333Mhz, not 266) RAM from your local computer shop (I recommend getting 512 MB extra), and you'll save $100+.

I have the Powerbook G4 and absolutely love it. I'm purchasing an iBook for my fiance for Christmas. For the first two weeks it was annoying as hell to use because I've used PCs forever. I'd suggest finding someone with a Mac and add them to your ICQ list for the million questions you'll have at first.

But after the first two weeks...

I'll never go back. I can tell you that.

That is a LOT of Mac software on versiontracker.com. When you're using a Mac and visit the site you're automatically taken to the mac section.

punkworld - the crucial website recommends the PC2100 DDR 266 modules for the 1.2Ghz iBook G4. Are you sure the PC2700 are necessary?

I've never had a problem buying non-Apple ram until buying my second iMac G5 of the year (in total I've purchased 4 new Macs this year alone). I purchased 1GB of Crucial RAM and it caused the computer to keep restarting. I thought the RAM was bad so I took it in. New Crucial RAM was used. Same problem. Then we tried it on other iMAC G5s in the store... same problem.

I said "fuck it" and bought RAM from Apple directly. No problems anymore.

Weird. That's the first time it's happened.

But, like I said, I love Macs enough to have purchased 4 of them this year and will be purchasing a 5th for my fiance for Christmas.

Joking aside, I think I can adopt quickly to the change. I've been taught a lot of very specific Human-computer interface facts about the Mac GUI. We'll see, I am very psyched about getting it though.

That is odd. Because architecture wise, the memory is the same... or at least should be.

But punkworld had a good point:

The 256MB upgrade costs $100 at apple's site, while the same module costs about $40 at newegg.

I just checked - the iBook operates at 133Mhz FSB, which requires DDR266 RAM modules.

Macs tend to be very picky about memory, and 266 sometimes actually means 265, and with 265, you'll experience pretty big problems. PC2700 is to be on the safe side, but with most brands, PC2100 will work just fine (e.g. Kingston, Crucial).

I just found this module which definitely is $120 cheaper than on Apple's page, and it should keep me on the safe side. Thanks for the tip again.

Although I could have thought about it myself... duh! Of course the manufacturer is gonna charge you and arm and a leg for add-ons.

I have a g4 1.2ghz 12" ibook and love it. I'm going to paint it tonight, or tomorrow. I'm not much for the white color as it tends to show dirt and dust easily so I'm going to paint it using the black pearl from the Cadillac Sixteen -> http://www.autotudos.hu/kep_het_kep_...ept_nagy.jp g

I'm heating up the paint booth as I type. Wish me luck.

I have a 17" PB 1ghz... my parents asked me today about the Ibooks... they want to buy one for my brother for Christmas... the 14inch... and I don't really see a difference except price... a few less video out options, no FW 800, and no superdrive, but its only $1,294 compared to $1,994 for the PB15.

This ibook will be 300mhz faster then my PB yet cost $2,000 less then when I bought mine which was May 2003.
