What's it like living in NYC?

One person told me it's like living in the greatest city in the world, and another person told me to crawl into my toilet and give my wallet to a gang member, and that's what it's like.

so who here lives in NYC and whats it like to live there?

I lived in Manhattan for a year. It was fun, but FORTUNATELY it was for ONLY A YEAR. NYC is a great place to spend a week or two, maybe even a month, but I don't know about living there... If we ever go back there, we will definitely live in one of the suburbs (Park Slope, Brooklyn is our top choice).

Expensive.

honestly, it's really not the same after 911. They lack the trademarked NY attitude... More like Melrose Place now.

There's just too much drama going on there. I want relaxation, and these days I find that in Arizona. Next on our list is Spain or Australia for a while... hoping this will happen soon. My suggestion to you: do whatever you want. Move and see if you like it Whatever you do - DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, LIVE LESS THAN A MILE AWAY FROM A FIRE STATION. TOO MUCH FUCKING NOISE, 24/7.

And since this is impossible in the city, at least be a good block or two away from them.

if you dont have a stable serious income dont bother, to enjoy NYC you need to make about 5k net a week.

Everyone thinks they have the numbers down then move here and run back to Kentucky after a year (last few months rent left unpaid).

But if you got the cash and want to have a great time, then this is the place.

I've lived in NY before, and here are my thoughts:

It's busy, noisy, and expensive

It's smelly and dirty

People are very rude and impatient

Life is all about work, everyone works like 60 hours a week, they make good money, but they only get like 1 week of holiday.

Even millionaires take the subway, because it's faster than sitting in a taxi in traffic going nowhere.

Shows like Friends and Sex and the City aren't anything like New York.

New York is an excellent city of business and making money, but for lifestyle I think it sucks.

I have always wanted to live there, but then everyone I know there wants to live here.

But I almost moved to Park Slope, my friend wants to move here and he has a rent controled apt there. Its super nice. But, I decided against it.

I loved being right in the middle of everything. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week...if you wanted something, you could get it.

But it would cost you. $2500 a month for a little one bedroom apartment. $5 for a gallon of milk. The list goes on...

Now I prefer to visit.

I partially agree.

I know a lot of starving artist and creative type people that get by in Manhattan/Brooklyn/Queens on very little money but have a GREAT time. Throw their own parties, art exhibits, build rides, have events. The fun is there as are the people to make it even if you don't have crazy liquid cash.

Yes, it is expensive, but without a doubt, the best city in the world. No where else has as much, high quality entertainment. From live music & museums, to movies & restaurants, there is no city in the world that compares.

We stay open all night, bars do not close at 1 or 2. If there are people drinking, the bars can stay open. The women are super fine, & we have the Yankees, so what else would you need.

Word.

I can take about 3 days of NYC then can't wait to get the hell out of there.

I think its a very risky place also now.

I love the shopping and restaurants, its amongst the best in the world. I love the architecture of the city. Its simply magnificent.

And I love those fucking street vendors that sell pretzels. Man I would kill for some of those NYC pretzels right now.

I love NY but not sure I could live there. I think I would rather live in or around Boston as far as cities go (from my experience).

NY is the best city in America. Yeah, to really fully enjoy every piece of the city you need a bit of money. But, I know people who have the time of their lives on a sudents income (nearly $0)!

NY isn't all about the superficial things to do. NY is the best because of the mix of interesting people. No matter what you are into you will find somone who loves it too. Plenty of entertainment can be found here for nothing. Hell, walking down the street here is about 5 times more entertaining than all out partying in most cities in America.

If the money factor is an issue for you all I can say is that there is no other place in the world where you have the same opportunity to make TONS of money to keep your party going long and strong like you can in New York City. If you need money it's here for you. Plenty of it!

If you want peace and quiet there's plenty of places to live here. Hell, a close friend of mine just bought a real ranch w/ horses 30 minutes outside of the city. But If I call him to come have a drink with me in one of the thousands of hot new bars in Manhattan he can be here as fast as it would take a commuter in Houston to get downtown from any other point in the city.

And forget about the crime. Manhattan ,and the areas closest to it, is easily one of the safest places I've spent time in. If you want to get robbed you have a very good chance of it by venturing into the grimey areas just like any other town. Ask Pete The Fly about this one. Too bad the search feature isn't working!

You can't beat this town.
